PHUKET: -- Four people were injured on Monday evening (December 1) when a car crashed into a canal on Thepkrasattri Rd in Mai Khao. One of them died later in hospital.

Tha Chat Chai police and emergency responders arrived at the accident scene near Baan Suan Maphrao to find four severely injured people who had been pulled out of the wreckage of the car by local residents.

One witness told police, “The car came at high speed then swerved to avoid hitting another in front. The driver lost control and the car slid into the canal, landing on its side.”

The four people in the car were named as Surin Hunttone, 38, the driver, and two relatives, Supawinee Samuthban, 41, and Sunida Hunttone, 11, all from Thalang, and a neighbour, Saisamon Khruabaen, 28.

Ms Saisamon die in hospital of her injuries and the 11-year-old was reported on Tuesday to be in critical condition.

Many residents said this stretch of road is infamous for accidents. They said that anyone driving along it in the direction of Phang Nga at sunset can be blinded by the sun.

It was the suns fault? Nothing to do with driving at high speed and recklessly? Time police started prosecuting drivers for reckless driving rather than finding lame excuses?

That wasn't a lame excuse, it was the observation of locals, who were not involved in this accident, citing a possible contributing factor.

Here's the contributing factors: speeding, inadequate driving education, no safety barriers, bad driving. If the sun is hampering vision, then speed needs to be reduced to a safe speed.
