Married in the UK wanting to change wife's ID card

Got married in the UK, we are now wanting to change her ID card etc, have been told many useless things by different agencies. I phone the Thai embassy in the UK they told me to get my marriage certificate certified by our foreign and commonwealth office, which I have done. Then to get it translated into thai and get it stamped by the thai foreign office, then to the local amphur. Wanted to try and get it done by post, but agencies in bkk are wanting avadavys and all sorts, anyone done it and want did you do

I'd doubt very much whether anything like that can be done by post. Even if you were in Thailand it wouldn't be easy! At least not without power of attorney granted to a third party.

Out of interest, is there a specific reason you need the card updated while in the UK?

Why are you trying to change it in the UK when there are no reasons or benefits?

She does not need an ID card here nor will having it updated achieve anything.

Take your UK marriage certificate and do it when you go home to Thailand.

I know quite a few Thais who have married in the UK never bothered to change to their husbands family

name.

My understanding is Thai law does not require the woman to change her name.

I think you already have the answer in your opening post:

That sounds about right to me. Similar to when you get married in Thailand and need an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry signed at the British Embassy, translated into Thai, then legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If you have any doubts then phone the local amphur to ask them exactly what they need. As Jay Sata said, there's no obvious benefits to having an updated I.D. card in the UK. In fact even in Thailand, I've heard some Thai women have experienced more hassle when their I.D. cards show to them to be married to a foreigner. Suddenly prices go up seeing as they're obviously rich now.................

That's just stories but I can well believe it.

So looks like a trip to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chaeng Wattana Road, but I'd suggest calling your wife's amphur to double-check if nobody can verify what you definitely need in this thread. If it is there that you have to go, I'd recommend paying the fee for same day service as it's always rammed and not a place you'd want to go back to after waiting a whole day without being seen. From memory it closes mid-afternoon as well.

If your wife wants to change her name then go for it.

You have a notarised marriage certificate and is cheaper and just as effective to get it translated and the translation notarised at MFA.

Then your wife can apply for a new Thai passport in her married name.

It's also much easier to carry through the UK settlement process with all documents in one name. One or the other.

get your marriage certificate trans.to thai,go along to her local amphur,with her old id.card and her tabian-ban,that is the paper registration of where she lived.
