I have been travelling to Savanakhet since the old days of the ferry.

Never had a reason to stay in the town and with the border crossing so easy now why bother?

You will find the Ploy Palace in Mukdahan a nice place to stay and nip across early in the morning.

Maybe you don't want to deal with the stress of an early morning dash.

I had the pleasure (not) of spending 3 days there .. I stayed at Leena GH, for no real reason,I wouldn't recommend it, but clean enough.

If you are there for one night, then there is a place called Sala Savan GH, which from the outside looks really quaint. Its in the old French historic area, not far from the river, 3 mins walk from the Church, a good French restaurant and there was a nice looking bar there too.

Its a way from the consulate, although there are "hotels" and "guest houses" close to the bus station / consulate - I think you would be pushed to find somewhere to eat at night. You could get a samlor to the consulate in the morning for under 100B i guess.

Hoong Thip hotel is one of the best value in town, around 900-1000 B

Though, make sure you ask for a new room, the old one suck.

Big room, corner couch, marble bathroom, breakfast is bit limited but fair.

Good location, next to restaurants and river.

Be careful if you're on a visa run, i've been told yesterday by a friend that the consulate issuing visas is not at the same place anymore, check their website for more info.
He also told me you can now apply morning and get your visa afternoon the same day.

Probably get a lot of haters on this but Savan Vegas is a good option. I always have to stay overnight for my non-o, so that's where I stay. Look the casino is crap, the food isn't flash but the rooms are reasonable and the price is not bad. For me the bonus is they have a free V.I.P. bus on the Mukdahan side that will take you across the border, fast track you through immigration and drop you straight at the hotel. It's close to the consulate and heaps of taxis, samlaw's out the front. Your own your own on the way back though no V.I.P. bus otherwise it's all good. Especially for a one nighter. Who gives a rats? Your only there for your visa. If you want to stay longer PM me I can tell you of heaps of nice places to stay.

Try the Joli Guest House , Sudthanou road, Ban: Lattanalangsy

Tel 020 9984 2899

030 9651 253

400 baht, clean, modern, ac, friendly owners, and not far from consulate.

Savananaket is a nice chilled out place so it's no problem staying overnight or longer. good riverside restaurants, ( but watch out for the tuk/samlor drivers for riding back into the town centre - some of them try to rip you off. nice bars in town centre, and cafes, , and Lao beer is good, especially Lao Dark.

cheers

You can pay everywhere in thai baht, no problem, dollars are also accepted everywhere.

One thing you have to be careful of is at the border when you enter Laos.

You'd better pay your visa in dollars.

if you pay in bahts, you will pay a much higher price as their exchange rate is ridiculous.

Make also sure your US dollar banknotes are perfect. Any little scratch and they'll refuse it.

If possible make sure you have the exact amount...because then, they might come up with a story that they don't have change and force you to pay in thai bahts....

Hoong Thip is kinda rubbish, stayed there on my last overnight in Savannakhet in 2012, was OK but there are better places in town and of course in Mukdahan.

I remember paying around 800 Baht per night not 900-1000 though.

Dollars are only accepted at immigration, mid-range and high-end hotels and other touristy places such as tourist restaurants. I would stick to Baht or preferably Kip, which is all that ATMs will dispense.

Now they have new rooms that are great. that's why I said to book a new room.

And for the price, well that depends on the season

Thai baht is fine but they will try and give change in kip. Make sure you spend it before leaving.

That's good advice but just in case money changers near the border and Bangkok Bank branches as well as a couple of money changers in Bangkok will exchange Kip to Baht just in case you still have some leftover.

Do you know where is Singapore Market in Lao and can we use Thai baht there to shopping?

I think you mean Talat São in Vientiane.

You can use Thai baht no problem.

Worth mentioning that if you want to use kip a lot bring a big handbag to carry it :-) Edited by Jay Sata

This casino is outdated and if it costs more than 1000 thb I prefer a 400 baht guesthouse which is at least worth the price.
