outsider
It seems Pongpat is linked to all of Thailand's crime syndicates. The ones getting caught, that is.Also known as a purge!!All part of a much bigger picture.................... The military and junta is purging Thailand of infidels in preparation for D-Day which will happen sooner that later. Dont let the rhetoric fool you. The military and junta are consolidating every part of Thai society in anticipation of such day. Who knows when it will happen or what the day actually is? For sure the Thai citizen does not. I doubt the enormous ridge in Thai society can be bridged in one lifetime, in my opnion. Exacerbated by how 'normal' Thais have their heads buried so deep in the sand. Sometimes I wonder how they breathe. Anyway, when everything plays out, someone should make a movie out of it. Heck, a mini-series. It'll make House of Cards look like a kiddie production... kiwikeith
Isn't online gambling rigged anyway? Who would want to play? what football were they betting on? Thai matches ? then they are rigged not surprising -- rigged I mean top NZ cricket players involved in match fixing as well as overseas boys and then there is the NRL comp footballers involved in suspicious activities accused of match fixing. If things carry on like this we will have to put up with honest gambling and there will be no more RTP left in Thailand!

impulse
Isn't online gambling rigged anyway? Who would want to play? Multiple farangs in Thailand gamble on line usually by playing poker in what is known as "grinds" to support their living expenses, they claim to be internet entrepreneurs/business people, typically on tourist or Ed visa's And thousands of others gamble on what is known as FOREX. Nowadays, it's tough to tell the difference. Except they don't arrest you for betting on the FOREX.
smutcakes
I doubt we will ever hear about an actual court case with this Pongpat chap. He definitely will not be put in a position where he can open his mouth and start singing like a canary. I presume he will be thrown in solitary for 20 years after a closed door military court, or he will have an unfortunate accident/suicide.
FangFerang
This government has consistently demonstrated temporary enforcement, selective enforcement and irregular enforcement. mathias67
With the police's poor wages, it is no wonder that most are looking for side incomes ... I agree 100%, pay a policeman Bt8,000 a month and expect him/her to buy their own uniform, bike and gun what do they expect. Pay them a decent wage and I mean at least double then maybe you will have more honest policemen out there doing their job

jspill
So perhaps the comments concerning legitimacy of on line gambling, trading business activities and digital pikeys were a lot nearer the truth than people realized. The matter it seems reaches into the highest echelon of Thai and it would seem also Indian society here not just the lower levels of the other locally based foreign characters here.. Perhaps those who were extolling the virtues of the digital pikey way of life would be wise to take cover as they would be an easy target for those who seek them. The big money boys have been nicked, so what chance for the small fry?. Multiple farangs in Thailand gamble on line usually by playing poker in what is known as "grinds" to support their living expenses, they claim to be internet entrepreneurs/business people, typically on tourist or Ed visa's There's a world of difference between: 1) A digital nomad playing recreational card games or trading forex on their laptop at home, on offshore domains that Thailand has no jurisdiction over, depositing and withdrawing USD or EUR via ewallet. Not one Thai Baht used or taken out of the country. Not one Thai hosted webpage. Done as an individual. 2) Hosting a Thailand based online gambling organisation out of a Kasikorn account with turnover in THB, promoting football betting to Thais with a network of other Thais and expats in my network and being involved in other 'unspecified illicit business'. Sending and receiving interbank transfers from Thai punters in THB. Gambling laws exist to protect Thais from losing their savings, e.g. betting on the Malaysia - Thailand match. smutcakes
It is literally impossible to cut out corruption, pay for promotions in the police. Everyone in the system from its inception has paid their way up through the ranks- it goes throughout the force across any political lines. I even believe the people at the top of the police force are powerless to stop it, given they have done the same thing, and their are tens of thousands of police on the way up who are 'playing the game'. Trying to cut that off would be suicidal for any head of police. The main thing i hope for is an improvement of policing standards. Proper investigations, civic minded police etc small steps would go a long way rather than trying a dramatic purge. Not even the army are powerful enough to curb it, not withstanding they have a very similar set up and set of problems. One of the most dangerous things that could happen for Thailand would be for the army to try a sustained crack down on police. Both are very well armed, large in number, have few scruples and would probably stop at nothing to maintain their status quo. I dont even think the army would dare try. "Only a crook pays $XXXXXX,,, to obtain a job that only pays, $XXX",,,,, Same EXACT case here,,, it's pretty common knowledge that it costs in the area of $300,000 baht and UP,, to become a RTP,,, AND pays more to gain rank/move up... If they don't like the wages then they shouldn't become police, it was their own choice.... fact is many join because of the corruption, their attitude is completely wrong. Here's a novel idea, seeing as so many sit around doing nothing, why not sack 50% of them, then double the wages of the rest, but monitor their performance, if below standard, get rid of the lazy bastards. rickirs
You don't have to look 'far and wide' to find internet Thailand gambling. For purposes of fact-finding only, just search for Thailand online poker games. Some are blocked by the NCPO and some are not - a Thai paradox. You know they're gambling sites when they offer "gameplay in English or Thai and accept wagers in Thai Baht or US Dollars."

You know they're gambling sites when they offer "gameplay in English or Thai and accept wagers in Thai Baht or US Dollars." Not sure what you mean by 'internet Thailand gambling', a site for which the domain is hosted in Thailand? Not many of those, they'd be easily blocked, and be unable to compete with the foreign sites anyway, which support dozens of languages, have decent software, player traffic, secure payouts, customer support etc., anyone serious about playing would play on one of those, or land on one after googling. Of those foreign sites, about 1% are blocked. PokerStars, Bodog, 888 etc., you can find a list of the 70 largest sites on the internet ranked in order on pokerscout. com. None of those are blocked. The ones that are blocked are ones that are more known for casino gambling and just have poker on the side (I work in the industry and have opened ~600 webpages on thai IP). Anyway you rarely see Thais start their own online poker site as they can't compete. Edited December 22, 2014 by jspill

Casino games, yes. Lotteries, yes. Sports betting, no, but it's hard to beat the odds the bookies set. Winners are experts in the sport and use software to crunch the numbers. Daily fantasy sports, no, you play against people when drafting players. Legal in the US. Poker, no, you play against people, but the rake turns most players into losers. Technically not rigged though, a small percent win, and use software to help their decision making.
