NAKHON PHANOM, Dec 23 -- A cold spell has hit Thailand's northeastern province of Nakhon Phanom where one elderly person reportedly died due to cold shock while a hundred thousand others face hardship, according to the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office.

Winter conditions have intensified in Nakhon Phanom as temperatures fell below 15 degrees Celsius for the past three days, the lowest level this year.

A 93 year old man in Pla Pak district's Nong Thai Yai sub-district died due to cold shock.

The cold has also severely impacted the lives of local residents, especially those living along the Mekong River, and children and the elderly.

Weerasak Wichiensan, chief of Nakhon Phanom Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, said the provincial governor has declared six of the 12 districts as disaster areas affected by the severe cold weather.

He said more than 150,000 local villagers are being affected by the severe cold and are in urgent need of winter necessities.

Mr Weerasak said he has coordinated with relevant agencies in all 12 districts to monitor the numbers of cold victims in order to prepare assistance for them. (MCOT online news)

93.. are they sure it was the cold that killed him?

By crikey I know a lot of old Thai Dudes up there

I hope they survived.

I love going there every New Year and finding them there to chat and carry on and some even party.

Once I tried to buy a heater here in Thailand. None of the electronic shops or furniture shops had them. Actually it took a lot of explaining because my Thai wife had never even seen or heard of them but thank god for the internet I could show a picture of a fan heater. I had two purchased and posted over to me some years ago but by the time they got here the cold spell was over. However today I realised that I still had them unused in their boxes. One of my relatives undergoing kemo has said he is so cold all the time so I gave him one of the heaters. He seemed pretty happy. The heater will heat him outside but I think his cold comes from inside due to the kemo.

Regards

I'd hate to see what would happen to them in the US. We are having an exceptionally warm winter so far, and it's 6 degrees celcius outside right now! I go about coatless in this weather!
