According to the service manual:

Recommended transmission oil Honda 4-stroke oil or equivalent API

Service Classification: SE,SF,or SG

Viscosity: SAE 10W – 40

Gearbox oil , just for the gearbox , can be rated two ways. On the oil cans , look for 90W (engine / crankcase rating 10/40W). Fully synthetic. Motul is my choice.

Good to know.

And what is the best brand T2 oil for the gasoline?

I'd like to minimize smoke.

I haven't had a 2-stroke since 1968, but that will change in January, Allah willing.

Something like this.

papa al , enjoying your trip report. Id use any "main brand" fully synthetic 2T oil in the fuel. Im a big fan of Motul ,( at 1000 b/LBaht per Liter , in England ) , but this quality isnt needed in most bikes . I like Shell fuels , so check the price of their FS oil , or Castrol Power 1 at 650 b/L or their semi synthetic EVO at 390 b/L. Rock Oil do fully synthetic oils for injecter systems and "pre-mix" systems for 550-650 b/L. These prices are in England and are cheaper if you can buy 4 L cans. Thai prices may / will be higher. If the bike has a oil injecter system , make sure its delivering the correct amount of oil , adjustable with shims , or with pre-mix run it at 35:1 down to 45:1 ( less oil ).

KTM: thanks

How do I check the delivery rate?

Pull the hose off and deliver into a graduated cylinder and time it?

What throttle setting for the test?

I'd have to put some pre-mix into the tank for the duration of the test, right?

No hab spec book on these dinosaurs, so what rate would be suggested?

Same delivery rate for synthetic and conventional oil?

B1000/liter. Yikes!

That is more expensive than KY jelly.

Can get 'ring- & bore-job' (wink, wink) for 1000baht.

Most oil injection systems use a two cable system. The oil pump assembly has markings on the linkage, and you synchronized the throttle cable setting to it, so both open at the same time at the same rate.

Let me know your year, make, and model. Will try to source out settings for you.

Much better - IF the pump is good - than premix.

As seedy rightly says , adjustment is posible IF you have the correct specs. Your idea of measuring oil displacement is spot on - yes , with oil in the tank. If these specs arent available , it gets complicated. Ready - ? - drain oil from oil tank / bottle , then put in a measured amount - EG 500ML. Fill fuel tank and use bike , using most of the fuel. Fill up again. How much fuel did you put in / use. Say it was 5 L. Drail the oil tank - again - and measure how much is now in there . Say there is 400 ML left , so youve used 100 ML. So , you used 5 L ( 5,000 ML ) of fuel , and 100 Ml of oil. So your oil ratio is 5,000 divided by 100 = 50:1. Ive used these numbers for simplicity. 50:1 is a little too lean for my liking. I run several 500cc KTM,s ( motocross / enduro / and " road legal " whistling.gif supermoto ) at a pre-mix ( no oil pumps ) of 33:1 on Castrol TTS , now called Power 1 . The pure track bikes run at 25:1 - plenty of oil , as they dont run much below 10,000 RPM - and they dont smoke , BUT they are flat out 40 % of the lap. Different for the road , where I would aim for a ratio fo between 35:1 and 45:1 , if theres no smoke , or 4 stroking at max revs. Any fully synthetic oil you have a preferance to. I was given tons of Castrol TTS ( part of a sponsership deal ) and im still using it , although they changed the name to Power ! , is the same stuff .Good stuff it is too. Dont panic about the price , 650 Baht / Liter , at a ratio of 40:1 and fuel consumption of 30 KM / L means 1 Liter will last 1,200 KM !!!.thumbsup.gif
