PATTANI - An army volunteer ranger is under arrest for allegedly shooting at his squadmate over a dispute in the restive southern province of Pattani.

Police say Sayan Paksasorn opened fire at Sgt. Manasak Pakchim at a checkpoint near Prom Prasit Temple in Panare district yesterday.

According to police, the two had a heated argument as they were manning the security checkpoint, and Sayan ended up using his firearm to shoot at Sgt. Manasak. The wounded sergeant was transported to Panare Hospital.

Sayan waited "calmly" for police officers to arrive and take him into custody, police say. It is not immediately clear if the suspect has been charged.

Tens of thousands of troops, policemen, and armed volunteer rangers, have been deployed in the southern border provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala, where separatist insurgents are attempting to create a breakaway Islamic sultanate.

You can take a Thai out of the village...give him a gun and train him to use it...but you can not predict how "Thainess" is going to affect the outcome of your investment...got to love the way Thais solve every problem...

Sigh, It's that word "Thainess" again coffee1.gif Still I suppose it's better than "The Burmese must have done it" which is another boring favourite on here.

When American soldiers shoot their own which has happened a few times over the last few years is this called "Americaness"?

Do Thai Visa Posters actually understand that the vast vast majority of things that happen in Thailand actually happen in other parts of the world also?

Of course. They are just more prevalent here.

This is no different than any other shooting and should not be treated any differently. Some act as though this is happening only in Thailand. I submit they should follow American news where there re multiple shootings across America every day. Most do not involve Military shooting their partners, except fopr the crazy doctor in Oklahoma who killed so many at FT. Hood a few years ago. Anyone with a gun is capable of murder under the right circumstances.

Average day in the USA - 30 gun-related murders and 162 people wounded by firearms..........53 people kill themselves with a firearm each day

"It is not immediately clear if the suspect has been charged."

But they are not are they? Do some research about gun related deaths in other countrys

Nothing to do with national culture - give guns to a large number of men and eventually two of them will have an argument.

Really? I thought the statement indicated that the author didn't know.

Are all UK doctors like Harold Shipman? Americans like Charles Manson?

My guess would be that TV posters post on things that are written about on here which is a forum about Thailand.

I imagine people who live in or love America or England or France will belong to forums that cover events that happen in those countries.

Makes one wonder if those forums have people who says things like "you do realize this sort of thing happens in Thailand also"

Still being as this is a Thai forum, please tell us what we should be posting about ?

Imagine what an average day in Thailand might look like, if the culture was burdened with an equivalent extent of "gun-ness."

We keep seeing "separatist insurgents are attempting to create a breakaway Islamic sultanate." I still don't believe it. They've never acted like revolutionaries or insurgents. If they really had political goals they'd be doing a lot more to get their propaganda out to people. Now, the Thai government has a lot of power to control the news, but until last year there were ways. For one thing if they were insurgents they wouldn't be restricting their bombs to the Southern provinces. The people down there don't have any power. Why terrorize them? If these really were revolutionaries they'd be bombing in Bangkok. Look at Vietnam. Did the VC restrict their bombs to Qui Nhon, of Pleiku, or Hue? No, they mostly set them off in Saigon. Not exclusively, but mostly. It should be the same way here.
