BANGKOK: -- The first two days of the so-called seven dangerous New Year holidays saw 1,133 road accidents occur, 128 people killed and 1,158 others injured, the Road Safety Center announced Thursday.

On the second day of the road accident monitoring period on New Year Eve, 625 road accidents happened, killing 70 people and injuring 641 others, the center announced.

Driving home last night at 2 am i'm surprised the total is not a lot higher so far. Some people just invite accidents and death here, stopping at a red light is not much to expect.

Went out to visit a friend this morning. On a 50 minute ride I counted 124 motorcycles. 17 were wearing crash helmets. Plenty of the tented checkpoints manned by a couple of bored looking people watching tv.

Apparently all the hospitals on Samui are full this morning,Every year here on NYE ,Songkran

etc there is carnage on the roads in Samui.Some of it can be blamed on the poor condition of the roads but from what I saw last night was mainly idiots of all nationalities driving bikes paralytic drunk at excessive speed many of these drivers by watching the way they drive have very little or no experience of driving motorcycles.The owners of these hospitals must be raking in the money this morning either in insurance payouts or extorting large amounts of cash money from those who unfortunately have no insurance.

No the police did not force these people to drink and drive, but they did not do too much to stop them either, judging by the road toll.

In the past 9 years I have done nearly 90,000 km in my Isuzu and like an earlier poster said, going by what I have seen over the years I am surprised the road toll is not a lot higher.

Things will never change until they increase the fines for traffic violations, and then enforce the law, 24-7, not just when it suits them.

No we are not talking about drugs but seen it's been brought up drug and alcohol tests for drivers.

Had a farang mate pissed as a parrot lived 4 km from the bar he dinks in plenty of tuk tuks songtaews and taxis but no he drives and talks out a street vendors business and puts the car through a shop window.Compensation 63,000 baht and no charges.

He chose to drive rather than fork out 100 baht fare.

Penalities are way to lenient .

Anyway according to the bashes on here it only takes 1 thai 1 Chinese etc and the entire population is branded

128 killed, 1,158 injured in 1,133 road accidents during New Year celebration

BANGKOK, Jan 1 -- Thai authorities reported that on the first two days of the seven-day road accident monitoring period for the New Year holidays, there were 1,133 traffic accidents in which more than 100 people died.

The accidents happened evan as concerned authorities campaigned for road safety as New Year vacationers considerably raised road accidents.

Kannikar Saengthong, director-general of the Department of Probation, said that 128 people were killed and 1,158 others were injured in the traffic accidents on the first two days of the government's road safety campaign during the New Year celebration.

On Wednesday alone, New Year's Eve, 70 persons died from road accidents.

The most common cause of the accidents was drunk driving and 83.30 per cent of vehicles involved in the accidents were motorcycles, she said.

The most victims in one province tied among four provinces with seven deaths each reported in Buri Ram, Chiang Mai, Phetchabun, and Surat Thani, Chiang Mai.

The highest number of the injured was 52, recorded in Nakhon Sawan province. (MCOT online news)

The death toll is very high taking onto consideration the number of people living in Thailand. It is one of the highest in the world. And to apologists who say they have seen worse driving in some other countries, it doesn't matter as Thailand road fatality is still appalling. I would recommend the ministry of education to introduce a school subject for the high school about how to behave on the road. The number of people dying on the roads is horrific and I suggest that Thai students should learn from school how to behave on the road because the police is useless at the moment by allowing reckless driving.

The normal daily road death toll here is 72 people per day. So with a two day holiday total

of 128, you can clearly see that the holidays are actually saving people......
