BANGKOK: -- Police have launched a manhunt for Kitisak Mattujad, who is believed to be a key person in the embezzlement of Bt1.6 billion from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang (KMITL). It is believed he fled to Hong Kong.

Crime Suppression Division deputy chief Colonel Nos Svettalekha said yesterday that Kitisak was accused of transferring huge sums to other people's bank accounts and then getting them to wire the funds back in exchange for a commission.

Meanwhile, police will also summon former KMITL rector Thawil Puengma and other people who were authorised to sign the institute's financial documents under the current and previous administrations to provide information on Monday, Nos said.

Police initially found that each withdrawal had to be approved by two of the four persons in charge of the institute's financial affairs.

So far, police have arrested the former chief of KMITL's finance division, Ampon Noisamrit, 56; the former manager of the Bank of Ayudhya Big C Srinakarin branch, Songklod Sriprasong, 40; Poonsak Boonsawat, 26; and Jariwat Sahaporn-udomkarn, 32.

Poonsak and Jariwat were accused of getting the stolen money put in their bank accounts. Arrest warrants are out for Kitisak, Sombat Sopradit, Janjira Sopradit and Sompong Sahaporn-udomkarn.

They are all facing charges of forgery, colluding to embezzle the funds and money laundering.

Ampon, meanwhile, has been transferred to the Min Buri remand prison after the doctor treating her at the Police General Hospital declared that her diabetes had improved, Nos said.

Thai actor Pakorn Chatborirak on Thursday presented himself to police to show his sincerity and report that he had bought a Lamborghini from Kitisak for Bt13.5 million. He presented the purchase documents to the police and insisted he had nothing to do with the embezzlement, Nos said.

Meanwhile, police have said that there are many more accomplices and that they are gathering evidence to apply for their arrest warrants, while compiling seized assets for the Anti-Money Laundering Office to investigate to see if the assets were gained legitimately.

Duh.. they maybe a criminal, but not stupid.. and with so much money stolen, would

any one hangs around to be caught?

Just another normal day in Thailand where anyone in an 'important' position who has been caught with their hands in the till is tipped off well in advance of any possible criminal case. Must be nice to get that phone call telling you to shift the booty and arrange flights well before the old bill even contemplate getting an arrest warranty. Amazing Thailand......amazingly stupid !

I find it hard to believe that anyone would simply just run away.

Surely they are just having an extended New years holiday. Doubtless they will be back soon to clear up this misunderstanding.

After all they are people of importance and respectability, if you can't trust them, who can you trust.

Is it any wonder the key players in major cases leg it since they get so much advance warning of every move the BIB intend to make.

They never learn to be circumspect and stop telegraphing their punches.

This happens so much it must be part of some master plan. Meaning the police

make a call, get a cut, and then basically let the guy do a runner. I can think

of no other reason why the police would give advance notice they are coming

to get you. This would be like higher more advanced version of when the police

raid a casino in Bangkok, no one is there.... cheesy.gif

Maybe, just maybe, if I had a few million/billion baht & someone told me , weeks ago, that a warrant was to be issued which could put me away for the rest of my life, I, passport intact, would flee -- in style !

Guess what? It's no longer yours. But thanks for coming by. We'll hail you a taxi.

Waiting for statute of limitations and make a come back, been done before and will be done again.....................whistling.gif

A small change to court procedure could allow for indictment in absentia, thus negating the ability to flee and wait out the clock. However, no government, even the current one, will make this change, since it is a matter of when, not if, current government members will need the same escape clause.

I'm so happy to hear that Ampon's diabetes had improved. And I'm pretty sure the actor had no inkling to know why he got such a great deal for his Lamborghini.

Have you seen the names on the board of this place. A political time bomb if any of them are implicated. Better to not squeeze anyone who might implicate them.
