Hmmm, shucks, that didn't work too well.

I walked up that direct route to Tiger's Nest Monastery. It is VERY steep, but really needs no hand rails until you get to the last 1000 yards or so. Then the walkway is very narrow but not impossible at all for a fit person with good cautions in their heads.

The way to this particular monastery needs very much to be difficult to walk because this monastery is a sanctuary, not a tourist drop-in place. Further, it is alleged that, just before a catastrophic fire several yrs ago (leveled most of it), many valuable ancient artifacts and treasures were stolen. The thieves had to use that difficult trail which, that time, did not deter them; it must have deterred others before.

The route needs to be left alone to the determined and the blessed. Please do not make this sacred site into a duplicate of Mount Everest with its ropes and ladders installed so that anyone, with a Sherpa to carry him, can summit. Some things just should not be made into a Disneyland.

And my point is this women's death has nothing to do with Koh Tao or farang deaths in Thailand or Police in Thailand ... sometimes these very worn out and extremely unclever comments are simply extremely distasteful. Absolutely no reason this women's sad demise needs to be fodder for the typical BS debates regarding completely unrelated topics.

BANGKOK: -- THE family of a Thai woman who died after falling off a cliff near Taktsang Monastery in Bhutan on Friday dismissed conjecture yesterday that she slipped while taking a "selfie".

The body of Navarat Borwornjirapat, 58, arrived on the weekend and is being held at a temple in Samut Prakan's Phra Padaeng district until the cremation on Saturday.

Her husband Wut said she went to Bhutan with a group of friends on a tour booked in Thailand. She loved to travel and visit temples. It was her first trip to Bhutan, he said. But he could not keep in contact with her because there was no phone connection.

His wife's friends called him on Friday, saying she died while walking down a cliff to a restaurant after worshipping at the cliffside temple.

"The spot where she fell does not have any railings or barriers. It is unlikely that she took a 'selfie' at the ledge, which is only 40-50 centimetres wide. Nobody could do that.

"Her friends said there were barriers on other stretches but not at the place where she fell,'' he said.

Porn, Navarat's younger sister, said she was told that her sister was on a pilgrimage and bought a tour package to go with four friends over the New Year.

She said she was not sure if it was an accident. She would wait for the results of an official investigation.

"My sister was a religious person and did not like to take 'selfies'. She did not have Line, or Facebook. She did not use any communication technology though she had a smartphone,'' she said.

She urged the media not to spread false reports that put her sister in a bad light.

"Though it's hard for us to come to grips with her passing. We are embracing positive thinking that she died in a sacred land,'' she said.

Navarat owned and managed a company called Louis Crane and Transport Co.

I was there and made this hike less than 24h after she did. According to the Bhutanese guide standing by and monitoring the spot, she was not taking a selfie when she fell.

It's sad to me how many people leap to this wrong assumption, which has strong undercurrents of condescension and judgment in it. It's a tragedy for her and for those with her when it happened, it makes no difference at all whether she was taking a selfie or not.

Thai tourist dies falling from cliff in Bhutan

A 54-year-old Thai female tourist has died after falling off a cliff in Bhutan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Based on a report from the Royal Thai Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the tourist fell off the cliff near Taktsang monastery in Paro, Bhutan.

She is said to been have traveling with a local tour group.

Officials have not yet concluded the cause of the accident but commented that the women may have fallen from the cliff while photographing the scenery.

Her body has already been retrieved and will be sent back to her home country courtesy of Dasho Ugen Tsechup Dorji, the honorary Consul of the Royal Thai Consulate, Thimphu.

Paro Taktsang monastery sits on a cliff in Bhutan. It is a must-visit place for tourists to the country.

The name of the victim and the cause of the accident remained unknown.

Rescue workers pulled the body from the site and the embassy had coordinated with Dasho Ugen Tshechup Dorji , the Thai honourary consul in Thimphu, to arrange for transport of the body to Thailand, the ministry said.

Bhutan police, meanwhile, the Thasi tourist might have fallen from a narrow path which has no railing.

They said the path is so narrow that could allow the railing to be built.

It is also a place where the lanterns were placed by the monastery.
