Russian Tourist Attacked For 'Not Buying Watch'

one should tell tourists to stop negotiating with fake watch sellers from first hand. Don't even start a fri...g negotiation unless you really intend to buy a fake watch for the price that is called minus 70%.

What is so astonishing, I watch the Russian tourists stop the fake watch seller, wind him up in a 30 minute bartering session, and then try to send him his way.

If I was a seller, I would get angry, too. You are wasting my time, I have got a life to live by selling watches to people who are interested, not to people to just want to make it a show to their friends and their grandmother.

Even if I get solicited while walking down the street, by a watch seller, I have the dignity of leaving HIM his very own dignity. I do NOT stand in front of him proudly proclaiming " Your watches are all but a fake" . I would tell him "leave me alone, I do not need a watch", and let him go after his business . .. I strongly doubt if you call them off in the correct manner, insisting you are not interested in his offers, they will stop insisting to sell you a watch and keep walking on, no matter if the fri....g watch is fake or not.

just say no, in a polite and comitted manner. Stop insulting them or calling them scammers of a million of fake watches.

You spit against the wind, you get spat yourself.

and you waste my time with all your speculations, you know nothing of what happened and what the Russian told the vendor or how the whole thing started.

If you smile and are polite you won't have a problem. Russians don't smile and are not polite.

rule n.1124 to visit Thailand: smile or be attacked.

and are you serious, Russians don't smile? none of them? should I start posting pics of Russian smiling just to prove how stupid your sentence is?

Didn't take long for the thai apologists to come out.

Hope I never have to say som nom na to them as they smile to a thai while he sticks a knife in their ribs.

Be polite and smile and nothing will ever happen to you in the land of smiles.

Gimme a break.cheesy.gif

"We will find the perpetrator and bring him to justice as soon as possible, because this incident damages the image of Pattaya as a tourist destination," Pol.Lt. Jakkrit said.

Not for any other reason then?

While you are at it, how about trying to find the guy who sold that deckchair.

Not because filth like this needs to be locked up?

"Pol.Lt. Jakkrit Chantakam, an officer at Mueang Pattaya Police Station, told reporters that police are checking CCTVs in the area to identify and locate the suspect. He also warned tourists in Pattaya to be wary of vendors who may become aggressive if tourists refuse to buy their wares."

So, the warning will have what affect on tourists even going near a vendor? Falling tourist numbers; no problemo; maybe extorting money from those remaining will make up for the loss. Or doubling the prices charged for fake watches.

Watch the vendors then...

do not let them vend the watches.

They are only trying to make a living. Up to you, you can just say : No thank you.

well according to this story, apparently you cannot just say no

Do you believe every story they tell you ? You do not know the story of the vendor. Possible a very big offence was made ? Who knows the truth behind the story ???

Aaah - the old apologist standard - probably the tourist said something rude, so he deserved to be stabbed in the stomach or beaten to death

Preview of what's to come in the following months , no low season and 1 week of high season surely has hurt a few.

All the stock needs to be paid and bills are the same .

For many money is borrowed from loan sharks and those expect to be paid daily

Som nam na. Trying to kill of the customers aint making things better.

Not excusing the assault in any way, but any wank would know that vendor with case full of various brands of watches is not an "authorized dealer". Someone needs to tell Rooskies to back off on the belligerent loud aggression style and tones. That stupidity will get anyone stabbed here.

The advice then would be that if I don't intend to buy then I better not look either. Kabobs, bug cart, ladyboys, watches, etc... any and all vendors, you better ignore them all without offending, don't look and for sure don't talk.

Seriously, how many of us dont know any watch you're offered in the street - anywhere - is either fake or stolen ? I just point to the Seiko on my wrist when they come into the bar and I never even glance in the direction of anything on offer at a street vendor. I'm not blaming the victim here - he has every right to pull out of a negotiation - just stating the obvious : dont get mixed up with these guys unless you're genuinely interested. As discussed in the thread on the Swiss guy who was attacked in similar circumstances, this is a sign of increasing desperation among a group where supply far outstrips demand and dodgy watch salesmen must surely be among the first to go under.

They dont have too many 'friends' in my world - still not sure that merits an attempt at disembowelment for the loss of face the vendor may have suffered in this case. We dont know how many time-wasters this vendor had to endure on the night in question, but slashing people with a knife doesnt strike me as the best method of dealing with dickheads. As others have pointed out, these incidents only add to Pattaya's woes : very few potential tourists would read a report like that and see it from the vendors POV.

Surprised none of the usual apologist gang have sprung up here blaming the 'faLang" for not having a PhD in Thai culture like they all do....
