Prayut pushes for community markets to help low-income vendors affected by reforms

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has stressed the need for community markets to be rapidly constructed throughout the country to bolster the earnings of lower income street vendors.

His concern of the trouble of low income vendors from his policy came as he met with the private sector and explained his administration’s efforts to solve the country’s economic problems and its measures to drive Thailand’s economy into positive growth.

He said all efforts were to ensure that the private sector and the government are on the same page and they understand the need for cooperation between them.

Gen Prayut did admit however that the recent NCPO (National Council for Peace and Order) and government’s attempts to reform Thai society has had some negative impact on many people who have seen their livelihood affected.

It is for this reason that he is stressing the need for alternative income to be found for them, he said.

One of the propositions that have been put forward is for community markets to be constructed all over the country so that lower income traders can market their wares and bolster their earnings.

Furthermore, the prime minister stressed the need for increased investments in domestic projects in every region of the country in order to drive the economy forward.

good idea...just don't forget to put some hygiene regulations in place(not the strict European ones, just some)

Perhaps he can allocate them the prime spots along his bicycle paths and order a blind eye be turned when they take over the whole lane.

To who's vision?

Wasn't government reform the big pitch?

And why does Uncle Too always look like he has to to take a dump?

Maybe I'm missing something but I rarely have to travel more than a couple of km's before coming across a market manned by the locals.

How about encouraging the formation of farmer's cooperatives free from vested interests & middlemen.

The local talads are already in place, and the problem they nearly addressed is the cost for a booth/place/cell at these privately owned lands being rented out. Vendors are charged way too much to make any money per day.

As for farmer's cooperatives as someone here suggested...well, the middlemen put on whatever shirt is in fashion, and nobody wants to interfere with their revenue or the tea money THAT generates..

Middlemen have only an allegience to the baht in their pocket.

In short. this sounds like feel-good hot air, but no balloons are going up.

I think they come out with this sort of trivial nonsense half a dozen times daily to keep peoples eye off of their real agenda

I don't think there have been any real clangers today, yet.

Probably because he's working on constipation constitution reform.

Its only early

What I mean is , The Junta seems to make statements about the most trivial of issues

I don't fully understand this proposal. There is no shortage of markets and no shortage of small vendors. What is his proposal? It is not clear from the article.

It is the lower and middle class and foreign owned business that are suffering due to your reforms. But the elites are okay.

Prajuths market next to the exising one.

do low income vendors ( cash businesses ) pay taxes ?

" the prime minister stressed the need for increased investments in domestic projects in every region of the country in order to drive the economy forward."

SO MAKE THOSE INVESTMENTS PM PRAYUT!

Instead he repeatedly calls on others to make investments, to take the risks, to be accountable for failure. He choses not to invest in Thailand's dual rail project but borrow funds from China. This Junta has proven to be not only an unreliable business partner but naive at best in understanding national economics.
