I got a driving license for a motorbike in Pattay 2 years and now it's expired. I got it with a 30-days stamp in my passport. Now I'm going to get a new one in Samui. Can anyone confirm the rules haven't changed and it's still possible to get a driving license having a 30-days stamp?

I am guessing no body knows for sure....

First license is good for one year.... then you get a 5 year license... without much trouble usually for those of us who are "permanent expats"... If I remember correctly you need a letter from immigration...maybe a letter from doctor... after that it's relativity easy...for the five year license.

But it may not work because too long since yours expired, plus being from another province, may cause some difficulty...

When I inquired about just changing my address, here on Samui, they said I needed a letter from immigration just to do that.

Go to the motor vehicle place in Lipa Noi, and ask, might be your best bet...

If you go to the Transport Department at Lip Noi - get there early. The girl only seems to do driving licences before 9.30 am.

Also - dress smart. (Long trousers and long sleeve shirt) - it really does make a difference. thumbsup.gif

I mean, getting a new 1-year driving license with a 30-days stamp, not a 5-years one.

How about the address, if I stay in a hotel or kondo but not going to stay for over a month, can I still get a residence certificate at the immigration? As far as I remember when I went to the immigration, they said I should just "say" my address and pay 500 baht and the next or the same they'd give me a residence certificate and then I could go to the police with it to get the driving license.

Yes, Samui immigrations will issue a certificate to anyone for 500 baht.

You don't go to the police for a driving license, you need to go to the DLT in Lipa Noi.

Yeah, by the police I meant the place where I get issued the driving license. smile.png Thanks.

On my infrequent visits to the UK I use my Thai Driving License to rent a Car.

it's a right get out of jail free scenario, the authorities are unable to endorse or fine you via speed camera's or any other type of ticket through the post, it's great.

any places closer to BKK that does this ?

and do you need to do to the same DLT after your 1 year license is over to get the 5 year renewal ?

most rental car companies just hit your credit card with any fines you run up, even if the bill comes in much later

I do the same thing.

Last time the clerk at the car hire company did not recognise the Thai licence. He pulled out a book. Looked up Thailand and compared mine with the picture in the book. Yep - all good he said.

In Bangkok hospital (or Samui hospital, I don't remember) the medical certificate for driving license they said cost 1200 baht which was clearly a rip off. Where can get it cheaper? It shouldn't cost more that 200-300 baht.

The government hospital in Nathon will be cheaper
