Human Trafficking Bar Raids in Pattaya and Banglamung

PATTAYA: -- In the early hours of Sunday officers from Pattaya and Banglamung Police Stations were busy conducting raids of Bars suspected of employing Thai and foreign nationals for the purposes of prostitution.

Officers from Pattaya focused their efforts on bars situated in Soi 8 off the Tepprasit Road, which cater mostly for Thai customers and their Banglamung colleagues conducted raids on the South Naklua Area which is also known as an area frequented mostly by Thai customers. Both areas are well away from the regular tourist bar areas in Pattaya.

Age & Nationality checks were made on staff members of the bars and licenses were checked in each of the venues.

Is it a Start or a Bluff...

The start? Raids on bars operating outside the regulations happen regularly in Pattaya. Unlike many non-tourist centres, the nightlife is fairly well regulated.

Prostitution is a protected job for Thais. The Thai girls are independent contractors that decide whether to go or not with a client.

They are not being trafficked at all. Not PC, but that is the truth. Human trafficking should focus more on the fishing boats and shrimp farms.

Exactly. Raids on that road in Thepprasit happen frequently. This seems to be in line with the reports around the country about the same thing. Looking for underage and trafficked girls.

If so, congrats for finally tackling this horrible practice.

I agree with you, but judging from the 18 pages of comments in this thread running concurrently, it has more than an academic interest to many TV posters. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/796638-police-beef-up-operations-against-prostitution-in-entertainment-venues/

Realistically "human trafficking" should be more broadly defined to include all forms of exploitation, but doing too little is better than doing nothing.

That will come as news to all the Russians, Laotians, Cambodians, et al who are/were "employed" in the "job." Haven't noticed that many Russians recently, but for awhile they were everywhere in Pattaya.

"...independent contractors that decide whether to go or not with a client"

Certainly not universally true and who knows what force is being exerted on some of those who are working.

No it's not the truth. If you think everyone servicing the sex tourists is doing so without coercion, that sounds like a very convenient world view. I know concentrating on the fishing industry is less inconvenient to Khun Farang, but there's a difference between being PC and burying your head in the sand (or elsewhere).

Do you honestly think kids in school are waiting to become 18 so that they can pursue their life's career dream of having sex with farang who have to pay for it or, for obvious reasons, remain celibate?

I can name you quite a few Pattaya ladys, from well of Pattaya families, who make a career on walking street.
