Three die in Kalasin house fire
The Nation

KALASIN: -- A mother and her two children were killed early Wednesday morning in a fire that razed their home in Kalasin's Kuchinarai district.

Police were alerted at shortly after midnight to the fire and fire fighters wrestled with the flames for more than an hour before bringing the blaze under control. The house, which doubled as a grocery store, was totally destroyed.

Fire fighters tried to rescue Taewan, 42, Vanida Bunkod, 15 and Vuttichai Srithopathum, 5 who were trapped inside the house. However, their attempts were thwarted by an electrical door that couldn't be opened and iron grilles on the bedroom windows.

Their bodies were found inside the house and police later said the three had died of smoke inhalation.

The husband, Bunpeng, confirmed that the house was a grocery store and had only one exit, which was the front door. The fire spread fast because there was oil in the house.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit but no definitive conclusion will be drawn until the forensic team has completed their investigation.

One reason I would not allow bars on my upstairs windows, in case of fire there is no way in or out. I also don't lock the door when I'm home. My condolences to the relatives and friends of those poor people who died.
