Just 10 feet from the Police Box on Soi 4 is a Vendor openly selling much bigger knives than this. 40 Feet away, just outside the Post Office you can buy any copy watch you want. Around the corner, about 100 feet away, are more prostitutes than you can shake a stick at.

Then again, just across the road near Soi 3 you can buy any sexual aid you want, including Viagra, copy DVD's, bags and clothes.

Good thing I never got stopped and searched on my many CBR trips around the north and north east of Thailand, or they might have found the Kershaw combat boot knife, and the push button lock blade, both with 4" blades, both razor sharp, that I carried on me at all times.

the woman said she had it in her car because she sometimes drives alone in Thailand and carries it for self-defence.

That means she intended to use it, maybe better to have another reason for carrying it.

As a SCUBA diver I will always have a knife in my kit, it will always be packed with my gear and never carried on my person except when diving.

We have a sharp knife in our glove box to peal/cut fruit. Its in a little holder so you don't cut yourself if rummaging in there. Its just a normal short kitchen knife, and has been handy on various trips (camping, etc).

This is a new low for Thai police. They need to respect people and use common sense.

I traveled all over the north and north east of Thailand on my CBR, always traveling alone. Sometimes I would get off the main roads and go to some of the smaller cities and villages. That is not always the safest thing to do for a foreigner at times. I'm a 4th Dan in Shotokan, and a 20 year Marine, so I definitely know how to take care of myself, but to my thinking, it never hurts to have a little "back up" should it be needed. I never had any intentions of using either knife, or even putting myself in a situation where it might be necessary, but this is Thailand, and sometimes things happen that make no sense, so it's best to be prepared, just in case. Always walk away if at all possible. If not, take down as many as I could, while I could.

Thailand is losing it

It's difficult to tell from what you can see in the video. But to me it looks like one of the larger modern Ranger Swiss Army knives. These have a larger blade that locks.

Her mistake was saying she carried it for self defense, indicating she regards it as a weapon, rather than as a tool. She should have said it was there in case of breakdown, emergency use and maybe to breaking a window if door locked in an accident etc. They were in their own car with their Thai driver taking them to the airport to catch a return flight to the Netherlands.

Good luck carrying a Ghurka Kukri. That would take some explaining.

You can buy knives all over the markets and malls, all sorts and sizes. They have guys who go around the streets with little trolleys full of knives, some of which are like short swords. However, buying is one thing. Carrying in public is another. I usually carry a small pocket knife - Swiss Army or other. Now I will have to reconsider. If stopped and searched and some Thai copper decides it's a weapon it could be confiscated and a small fine. Ridiculous but that's the wonderful RTP.

These people didn't really have it in public - it was in the console of their car. Which the Thai police searched for no reason other than they felt like it. Sorry to say but the police do just as they like, when they like and how they like. No particular regard for the detail of the law.

Similar situation in UK now regarding knives. Can only carry if less than 3 inch blade, slip joint only, no lock or assisted opening. Can be asked to explain why you are carrying it even if it meats the rules, and if anyone complains you used it in a threatening way or scared them you are in trouble.

Thais I know carry large knives, flick knives (switch blades), pepper spray, truncheons, and batons in their cars all the time. A few have guns although don't usually take them out. If stopped, they don't expect a fine, a confiscation or any trouble from the officer concerned. Different rules.

Everyone knows they are criminals with a free pass but at the moment are required to show the public they are doing their job. These people were soft targets.
