It's official.

Sort of anyway.

Drinking coffee in moderate amounts (3 to 5 cups daily) is beneficial to health.

So are YOU drinking ENOUGH coffee?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/02/21/its-official-americans-should-drink-more-coffee/

"We saw that coffee has a lot of health benefits," said Miriam Nelson, a professor at Tufts University and one of the committee’s members. "Specifically when you're drinking more than a couple cups per day."

That's great news if you're already drinking between three and five cups each day, which Nelson and the rest of the panel consider a "moderate" level of consumption. But you know what? You probably aren't, because people in this country actually tend to consume a lot less than that. On average, Americans only drink about one cup of coffee per day, according to data collected by the United States Department of Agriculture. Even when Americans drank the most coffee they ever have, back in 1946, they still only drank two cups a day on average.

Just voted with 4, though sometimes it's just 3. I drink first thing in the morning only, and very rarely drink any in the afternoon or evening anymore. Always only drink fresh ground, brewed or pressed, never instant, no sugar, add a small amount of low fat cream or low fat non-dairy creamer.

JT, I do believe that drinking that Cafe Yen (Ice Coffee) in Thailand is very beneficial for my health.

It consists of about a tea cup of condensed milk, 2 or 3 spoons of sugar, some more evaporated milk and if you are lucky they put a teaspoon of coffee in.

And i keep complaining why my manboobs are growingw00t.gif

No different here, always drink 7 big mugs of black coffee every morning, never had sugar in it right back as a small kid... [60+ years] Parents never understood why I could drink coffee or Tea with No sugar, just did not like it and would spit it out if sugar was added..

So my vote was 7..

I am assuming by cup they mean an 8 ounce serving of normal strength brewed coffee.

That's really not a large amount of liquid.

If so, perhaps that would be equivalent to one shot of espresso.

A large mug is much more than a cup.

Of course brewing strength would be a factor, wouldn't it?

I wish they had detailed their definitions.

Just making some assumptions.

The article doesn't get into it but you definitely change the drink if you add lots of cream and especially sugar.

Personally, before I "retired" all my adult life starting as a teen I drank A LOT more coffee, definitely in the too much zone. Perhaps about 8 cups a day or sometimes over 10. Now I'm at borderline "not enough" ... maybe at 3, maybe a bit less, depending on the measurement specs.

I am Brazilian, and white. I just stopped to drink so much coffee..when I was getting darker skin.

By the way.....In Brazil...if you drink instant coffee...you will lose your citizenship and will be deported.

No coffee....try for 3 liters of water a day - which is even better for you......if you had a cup half filled it's more coffee than I've had in my lifetime.....

Are we talking measuring cup sized cups? I drink 4 to 6 fairly substantial mugs per day ( and another 4 even larger mugs of tea), but a standard dinner service sized coffee cup would be a lot less over several days or week.

Our coffee maker instructions often refer to a "cup" of coffee. These cups are whats marked on the side of the coffee maker showing how much water is in the reservoir. The instructions never define what a "cup" actually equates to. It appears to about 6 oz. An old coffee maker seems to also have had this definition of "cup". The coffee beans we got from the local coffee shop also have instructions indicating one scoop of beans per 6 oz cup.

To be clear -- Is a "cup" to a coffee maker always 6oz? and therefore it has nothing to do with the Imperial unit "cup" which is 8oz? Its more a notion of a typical serving size of coffee?

I do drink instant coffee, but good instant coffee and i usually use about two tablespoons of said coffee in a mug with one sugar and milk.

One in the morning to wake me up along with the proverbial cigarette. Another around 11am before the proverbial aperitif. Another after lunch. And then the last one around eight.

As i am menopausal and sometimes suffer from insommnia. I sometimes have a coffee at around 4 in the morning whilst watching weird stuff on the TV. I just get the urge for a coffee, herbal tea can go out the window!!

In fact the four in the morning one occasionally sends me to sleep. So then i sleep till 10 or 11 and then start the whole cycle again.

When i get rich i want to buy a proper expresso machine that wakes the neighbours up. But till then i shall stick with my instant or the occasional "real" coffee in a café, which around here costs about 3 pounds sterling. More expensive than wine.

I enjoy 2 cups a day - both before midday (preferably)... its Tea in the Afternoon for me...

My Nespresso machine makes a great cuppa with minimum faff in the time it takes to boil a kettle...

I'll admit to being a little wired if I have too much coffee (i.e. 4 cups) so I stick to two..

Who are these wimps who don't drink 8 cups per day? That's only about 6 typical mugs of coffee.

I don't think the article defines what they mean equals a cup of coffee in a precise way so we just have to make some assumptions and estimates. Personally I am sure I am not suffering any ill effects at my current levels and might even consider pushing it up a bit to make sure I am really getting to at least 3 cups. Keep in mind the benefits of coffee are about much more than caffeine. There is other stuff in there. So drinking tea or other caffeine beverages is not the same thing.

I think you are preaching to the famous exalted ChangSinghaLeoBloodyMary choir & dance troupe...which can be heard and seen performing/belching at many venues nightly.....

Not sure which ones are tenor alto or baritone though.....

Switching to coffee probably might kill them.....or they would feel like it for awhile.....

I would wager the curtains in NS's house on the prairie are of the same pattern
