BANGKOK: -- Siriraj Hospital is now running short of blood in its stocks and is seeking blood donations to assist a large number of patients in urgent needs.

Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine of Siriraj Hospital Assistant Professor Dr Parichart Permpikul said the hospital is running short of all groups of bloods, prompting it to call for immediate donations from the people.

She said since Siriraj is a large hospital with about 2,200 beds, it therefore needs a large amount of blood or up to 80-100 units a day for needed patients , excluding blood reserves for patients who have scheduled for surgeries.

She said the hospital needs to have at least no less than 150 units per day to allay fear that it will not suffer blood shortage while in operations.

As the number of blood donors declines sharply, the hospital now us in need of blood particularly Groups O, A, AB respectively.

She advised further that blood donor should also has physical readiness with at least taking enough sleep for 4-6 hours, must be over 50 kilos in weight, and has no chronic sickness.

This is one of the issues our Prime Minister should be concerned and start a campaign urging Thai people to donate blood.

That would bring more happiness and save many lives and not the parades dancing and loud music.

Oh my God. Costas2008 made sense, surely by accident, for the first time I have ever seen.... The article should also have stressed that all negative blood types are very rare in Asia, so while A negative is unusual in the West, it is very hard to obtain here. AB negative is like red liquid gold.

One sure way to get more blood.....Make a national freedom day, all bike riders free to wear no helmets on the highways and byways. and Ignore the stop signs and Red lights. That should bring in a few litters!

I'm 99% sure I'm AB - (negative) but every time I go ask about donating blood as I did in UK over 100 times - in Thailand get blank face and "mai" and been here 3 years

With so many people dying everyday on the road, why not taking all their blood on the spot?

Its a serious question !

How long before bloods coagulates when you just died ?

Thanks !

I think the idea is to use the blood to save lives. Not to see someone who's been in an accident and rush them back to the hospital just so you can drain the blood.
