Phuket City faces driest dry season

PHUKET CITY: -- Phuket City will be short of water this high season, Mayor Somjai Suwansupana told Phuket Post. Despite purchasing water from private agencies and the Provincial Waterworks Authority, Phuket City Municipality does not have enough water supplies for the dry season. The city is now looking at wastewater recycling to fulfill its needs.

Professionals from Germany conducted a three-week environmental study on Phuket (ending July 14) and presented the results to Phuket City Municipality. The report noted that wastewater around Phuket city should be processed before being drained into the sea and Phuket Municipality already has standard clarifiers for cleaning wastewater. The study also indicated that Phuket City could manage its garbage problem by recycling it into bio diesel and bio gas.

Mayor Somjai said Phuket Governor Udomsak Uswarangkura has made the water supply issue a priority. “We are in talks to take water from Cheaw Lan Dam (Ratcha Prapa Dam) at Surat Thani province to use in the future,” he said. “Also the Phuket provincial government is always in discussions to find a solution to the water supply problems on the island.”

Phuket City Municipality does not have enough water resources to produce tap water for residents during the dry season he said. “We’ll use recycled wastewater but should publicise that it’s clean and safe, because most people are not familiar with recycled wastewater,” he said. “We should test it in the toilets at the Phuket City Municipality building or use it to clean roads.”

Gutters on roofs would be a good start. The amount of rain we get on this Island is more than enough water for all.
