Phuket City first to get underground cables

PHUKET: -- Phuket City will be the first area of the island to benefit from underground cabling, city mayor, Somjai Suwansupana, announced recently. The government is proceeding with plans to bury power 300 metres of cables on Thalang road and Soi Rommanee as a test project before extending the beautification treatment to other areas of the city and island. This area was chosen because of its popular ‘Cultural Road’ events, which draw many visitors, he said.

The Provincial Electricity Authority is designing the plans for moving cables underground and after the test area is completed, it will conduct a poll among local residents to determine if the burial of cables is beneficial and aesthetically appealing. “We won’t place the wires too deep in the ground,” Mayor Somjai said, “because it must be easy to access them for repairs.”

The budget for the project is expected to come from the Provincial Electricity Authority and Phuket City Municipality. “We are now waiting for plans and budget approval from Provincial Electricity Authority,” Mayor Somjai explained, “and in the future we plan to expand the project to cover all of Phuket City.”
