NLA begins impeachment voting of 38 former senators

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) began secret voting of 38 ex-senators accused of illegally trying to amend the composition of the Senate.

The voting which began 9.30 am came after the NLA heard the closing statements from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the accused former senators on Wednesday.

NLA deputy president Surachai Liangbunlertchai said he expected the counting of secret voting could finish by 1 pm.

The 38 former senators had abused their power and violated the constitution in their attempt to amend the 2007 charter regarding the Senate’s composition, according to the accuser, the NACC.

According to Bangkok Post, The amendments to the charter the 38 former senators approved in all three readings were different to the ones they, along with former Pheu Thai Party MP for Nonthaburi Udomdech Ratanasathian, formally proposed for deliberation on March 20, 2013, the NACC said in its closing statement yesterday.

A significant difference was in the amendment to Section 6 of which the original draft said senators would not be able to serve consecutive terms, but the version endorsed later said they could.

But a source said it was very likely that all the former senators will survive the voting as the votes will fall short of the required 132 votes or three-fourths of the total NLA members.

The source said accusation by the NACC was also unclear as to prove them guilty.

Besides many NLA members also said the 2007 Constitution which stated of such offences had already been scrapped.

The 38 former senators facing impeachment voting are divided into four groups, based on offences each group was accused of.

NLA members are given four ballots with different colours to vote whether to impeach or not to impeach each group and 132 votes will be needed for each voting for impeachment.
