Dow Boyer's deportation order is lifted

PARK HILLS: -- It's been nearly a year since Komdown “Dow” Boyer’s life was turned upside down by the possibility of deportation.

The St. Francois County woman was picked up during a routine probation visit by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) on March 13, 2014 and taken to the Lincoln County Jail in Troy, where she faced deportation to Thailand and possibly never seeing her family again.

Now today, she is a free woman and ICE has dropped the deportation order. Dow will have her Green Card reinstated and will be able to go back to work.

The problems began when the Bonne Terre mother of four began skimming funds from her employer to make ends meet after her husband’s legs were crushed in a work-related accident. The accident left the Boyers with medical bills they couldn’t afford. Eventually the theft of funds was discovered and charges were filed on January 30, 2012.

Dow never denied what she did and wanted to make things right by paying back the money she took. But then it was during the court proceedings she discovered she was not a U.S. citizen as she had believed her whole life. She also learned that the charges and guilty plea would result in her potentially being deported to Thailand, a country where she was born but hadn't been since she was 9 years old.

She should have claimed to be Mexican. would have received benefits and a drivers license

Should have headed to the UK and thrown away her passport on arrival.

What no jail time

Not usually for a non-violent offense if she has a clean record. This gives her a record and she's on probation under supervision. She'll have a hard time getting a job if at all, and has generally screwed up her life.

How could she think she was a citizen but not be?

Thainess, mother probably told her she was because thats what sounded right.

Not sure how the US works but in Australia you have to show proof of citizenship, permanent residency or a work permit to get a job. Surely at 39 yrs of age she would of applied for the odd job. I guess she never had or applied for a passport. Surely someone of that age would be aware of thier residency status. Ask my 6 year old and he can you his.

The US has millions of illegal Mexicans working. It's all screwed up.

If she was brought to the US as a child, she probably was granted Permanent Resident status. She would have been able to get a Social Security Card. Unless she is working for the gov't she would not necessarily had to show any proof of citizenship. You do not have to be a citizen to work in the US.

Do people really keep missing the line "Dow will have her Green Card reinstated and will be able to go back to work."

She was a greencard holder before any of this happened. She was legally there. End of.
