Hua Hin undergoes beach facelift

hhin.jpg

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 19 March 2015 (NNT) – Prachuap Khiri Khan province has cleared up its Hua Hin beach as part of its city cleanup campaign.

In response to the resolution of the city committee, Hua Hin Municipality has carried out removal of 22 stalls extending from the area in front of Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin to Khao Takiab which was previously an area allowed for small business activities.

Hua Hin’s assistant district officer said all the stall owners were aware of the objective of the city cleanup campaign and agreed to cooperate with authorities. They will move to a newly arranged area which spans more than seven kilometers. The assistant district officer added that the beach revamp is the biggest-ever task.

The beach facelift is also part of the preparation for the upcoming mobile cabinet meeting set for March 27-28 at Suan Son Pradipat Beach.

Just wondering about the legality of all those huge seafood restaurants along from the fish market that have extended their stilted dining areas well out to the low-tide mark.

Does anyone have any knowledge of their future or indeed legal standing?

Illegal.

There has been talk of removing them for at least fifteen years, but I suppose enough money is paid to the right people.

Good. About time too!

Let's hope this clean up includes cleaning up all the horse muck and sellers trying to flog you fake ray bans and billabong shorts.

The horse muck is a real turnoff. Weekends and public holidays (when Thais converge on the town)have the horses but during the week let them have a rest in their stables. There are a small number of vacant beach blocks by the beach to Khao Takiap. It's a pity they couldn't convert them to food court / parkland areas overlooking the sea, keeping restaurants off the sandy beach for good. And Petchkasem road is in serious need of three or four more pedestrian crossings from the clock tower precinct down to the southern flyover. A proper crossing at Market Village is essential. One pedestrian crossing (often turned off) and one walkover bridge over 4 kms. is pretty poor.

I lived in Hua Hin for 9 years. The people who own these places are making a fortune, but refuse to put anything back. They could employ people to clean up the beaches at ...say...4 hour intevals and at night when it all closed. But they are just money grabbers who believe the good times will always be there.

Now Ilive in the Philippines and if an area around a restaurant on the beach is not leaned regularly the owners face a hefty fine....Result ? The beaches are spotless.

Oh, what a nice beach! Yeah, from the pic! But beware to go close! From the airport to Khao Takiab Hua Hin streches well over 12 km along the coastline and almost all the waste water is going untreated into the sea. There seem to be a municipal wastewater treatment plant at ONE tiny canal. But how many small canals service their loads untreated into the sea!

Yeah, what a clean beach! Not to mention the masses of dead jellyfish and the plague of sandflies!

Illegal. All the buildings, hotels and restaurants between Hilton hotel and the harbour are on the public land/beach....since Hua Hin was born. No worries, under protection.

All the money we tourists plough into Hua Hin, one way or another, but the local council give nothing back.

It gets dirtier every year, the smell of the drains, the state of the pavements, taking your life in your own hands to cross a busy duel carriageway. I don't think they really care about us tourists but if it wasn't for us and our money, well you work it out.

I completely agree, MRGTINGTONG.

Look at the inner city roads! Narrow, broken, unsafe, congested! Since YEARS!

Look at the railway crossings! Designed to ruin every vehicle!

Look at the sidewalks! Broken everywhere and full obstructions!

Look at the scandalous lack of ANY traffic management! Nobody cares.

Look at the insane new main street layout! The poor piece of a lunatic!

Look at the open waste dumps alongside so many outbound roads! Pleasure places for packs of wild dogs.

The list could go on, but enough.

Fortunately the tourists don`t go there, and thank God, the pale-skinned High-So Bangkokians cannot see the mess behind the super dark tinted windows of their SUVs when they leave their beachside condos.

What a nice place is paradise!

I do wonder where all the money has gone. The place must have a huge income.

And who is buying all those horrible condos? There are massive developments with a few zillion units both north and south of Hua Hin.

Are they all really being sold? Can't imagine there is any remote likelihood of rental income, they are too far out from the centre.

Thailand is no different then any other tourist attraction. The Thais, really don't see trashy beaches, roads, empty lots. They just blur it out of their minds. It has become part of the landscape, a normal occurrence. We are very lucky their are no graveyards around. I can visualize grave markers removed for building material, grasslands covered with food carts. Thais for the most part have no respect for undeveloped property. They look at it as a dumping ground for their trash. They are worse then the poorest blacks in the South, or the Mexicans in their cardboard houses in Tequila, Mexico. Thailand, if you love your country, with all its splendor and ancient history, stop this madness of bringing in tourist. You are destroying your own country.

Soon new areas will be coming on line in the South Pacific. The Fiji Islands, Samoan Islands, and a hundreds other Island near the Philippines. Your high prices, and over crowded beaches, the scams, is destroying it all. Your focus on tourism is not in the best interest of the Thai people. Government needs to do something drastically. Industry, Industry, is what is needed. Move people away from the cluttered street of Bangkok, Move them 150 miles to the north, where the Industrial Revolution will be. Build planned neighborhoods where they will live, provide waste management facilities to collect trash, and recycle cans, bottles, cardboard and plastic. Build mass transit

Rail to Bangkok, and Harbors. Why do you want to continue on this third world mentality? Your handicrafts are getting old. In Boson (Chiang Mai) I see all the junk on the side of the road they are trying to sell. Just about every shop has the same things. Silly souvenirs made from bamboo, cheap wood carvings, Painted umbrellas, that can't be use in the rain. Fake imitation Honey, cheap terrible wine, and loads of other items. Clean up the Bars, get rid of the hookers and bar flies, in force the laws of no Prostitution. Do we really need the next load of bums filling the streets at night drunk and disorderly. It looks like a carnival, charades of he/she boys walking the streets. Farlungs cat calling, and displaying all the negative traits of being an adult in a wild town. If you continue on this present course, Thailand will be just another port of call, for the scum of the earth to visit, and the Thai people will all be scamming to get that last baht, as they fly off in the sunset home, to tell all what a hell hole Thailand has become.

Yeah,

Well tourism is less than 10% of the Thai GDP. So that is no going to solve any long term issues.

I am not sure about all that splendor and ancient history. There is certainly a lot of national pride, but if you look back and try and find any substance, it seems to be a little intangible. The religions and culture which came with them and form the basis today emanated out of India, Nepal, China and the middle east.

Industrially Thailand has become too expensive compared to Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma for cheap labour, major manufacturers are looking to move over to those countries.

Thailand is now also missing the boat on moving up the chain and educating the population to have more skilled workers, such as Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.

And there is now also a massive demographic issue in Thailand, as the number of kids per mother is down to 1.4, the lowest by far in the whole Asiatic region. It might be interesting to conjecture why this dramatic drop has occurred.

I would hazard a guess and put it down to increased use of contraception and realisation by females that the Thai male is not held legally or morally responsible for his progeny, and the girls are getting fed up with taking on the huge burden of their aging parents and kids.

Let us hope PM Prayut and Ministers take a walk from Suan Son Pradipat Beach up to Hua Don Beach and have to walk through the horse shit and rubbish that the rest of us residents have to walk and swim through each day.

Hua Hin beaches are certainly getting worse .... they are not the beautiful pristine beaches that I first stayed on with some university student friends from Bangkok back in the late 1970s.

The corruption here is astounding, and one just has to look at all the buildings which contravene local building regulations, both respect to the height of the buildings as well as the location of the structures.

Maybe before General Prayut arrives, his good offices should go through the local building regulations, and then some of his staff should accompany him for an extended walk along the Hua Hin beaches, say from the Palace to Suan Son Pradipat Beach, highlighting all the structures which are illegal. Then the army from Fort Tanarat should be called in to demolish all the legal structures.

Ahh ... I have just woken up ... been dreaming again in the Land of Scams.

Away from the tourist areas, the roads in Hua Hin District are a disgrace.

Yes, all the tens of millions of Baht coming into the local economy each week, all the millions of Baht in taxes being collected weekly, but where is all the money going? Not into improving Hua Hin's infractructure.

Talking with some long time Thai locals here revealed that some roads, and the electricity and water supplies only improved after His Majesty the King moved his official residence to here.

I live in an area surrounded by new condos (less than 5 years old). One rarely sees lights on in more than say 5% of the condos, with one most likely to see lights on on a Friday and/or Saturday night, when the Bangkok owners come down for the weekend.

Most of the condos seem to have been purchased by Bangkok-based speculators, who buy up a block of 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. condos in a development at a time. I do not see them making a profit anytime soon.

Maybe the new proposed land tax should be extended to condos also!!!! The result, fewer condos, lower prices, and a nicer natural environment.

I completely agree, Jimhuahin!

Since many years I am asking me: Where is all the money going? And WHY is there absolutely no improvement in city infrastructure for the local people?

The daily open market is still a stinky place although it has been renovated a few years ago.

The shop rent in crucial tourist areas has increased so dramatically forcing the local businesses to move out and leaving the space to massive Indian tailors and real estate agencies.

Parking space in all of the central roads is blocked with self-appointed “taxis” charging hundreds of Baht for short distance rides.

The beach is 5 km long, but there is nowhere any shade. Apart from a few lonely palm trees in front of Centara, there are no trees at all and umbrellas are now subject to hefty fees.

No urban planning,

No traffic management

No road safety measurements

No infrastructure improvements

So where is the money going?

To high rising buildings, hotels, condominiums, penthouses, resorts, restaurants, shopping complexes, retail outlets and silly tourist attractions like floating markets where there has never been a river or a canal in Hua Hin. Out of three (!!!) floating markets one has never really opened due to lack of visitors, one is a boring shopping place for overpriced knick-knacks that nobody needs and the only one worth visiting has recently introduced an entrance fee of 200 Baht, BUT ONLY FOR FARANG!

Indeed, it is such a joy living in paradise city where Thais enjoy the rising cost of living without seeing any improvement in their daily lives and Farangs are fleeced wherever they go.

That photo does not resemble the public beach area in the centre of the town itself where i took my mum and relatives several years ago. Worst beach i have been to anywhere in Thailand. Thai wife did'nt like it, mother hated it. Hua Hin is vastly over rated. Overpriced hotels and guest houses, poor parking, bad traffic, expensive food etc etc. After 2 days, we moved 20 kms up the road to Cha Am, and had much better experiences in all of the above.

I wonder the same thing, the last 2 visits we've done there, driving in from Bkk we've passed the new "6 star" development just north of HH. It's massive, on a scale I've rarely seen before and can only imagine how difficult it's going to be to fill.

I agree with the many excellent points made here.

The road layout near the new water park is shockingly bad, it really has to be experienced to be believed.

As is the new layout on the canal road. Those new u-turns are an absolute disgrace. They're so dangerous that whoever commissioned them should not only be ashamed of themselves but should be held fully accountable for any accidents or fatalities which occur on that stretch of road.

Then add to the fact that in addition to the u-turns, the street lights on that road (pretty much where the old immigration office was) have not been working for months - again has to be experienced to be believed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no health and safety nerd but the canal or klong road is so dangerous, it really is.

Why is there such little regard for public safety and well-being here?

And don't get me started on the water supply!!

Out of water for nearly 4 days this week in Smorprong!!

We had to get a refill from the fire brigade, which I'm sure isn't the best use of their time and resources.
