My dog breeder taught me to put tubs of water in the freezer (ice cream tubs) and drop a block of ice in their water bowl from time to time. They love drinking cold water and it keeps them "cool on the inside".

I love dogs and don't necessarily see anything wrong with what the OP wants -- people spend more money on more useless cr@p all the time ($4000 Rolex, anyone?). But I can only imagine how the Thais would view this, especially the vast majority of the ones I know who live without aircon in their house. 'Crazy farang' comes to mind... :-)

I would have to say that it is the way the dogs have been raised rather than their nature. Although they have an extremely high prey drive, IMHO, it would take a lot for them to kill another dog. Still, you always get some bad in every breed.

We own two 5 yo sibes, both born in Thailand, and you would be surprised how adaptable they are. Everyone imagines Siberian huskies as pulling sledges through the snow, but seem to forget the other side of the temperature spectrum of their original country, which can be hotter than Thailand.

Mine have never seen snow.................

With the 'everyone imagines sibes in the snow' statement above, this includes Mrs. Chrisinth. The house we are in at the moment had a 'Thai' kitchen which we bricked up, installed an aircon and put sliding doors on the front so that the 'hairy children' could sleep in artic conditions. They sleep there every night

OP, as mentioned by another poster earlier, if you do install aircon for your dogs, there is no need to crank it down to it's lowest settings as it can be harmful to the animals.

I built my large dogs a cinderblock dog house with fan.........somtimes I have to sleep out there with them, maybe an air con would have been a good idea.

This is a stupid as buying coats for dogs, Dogs body's regulate the thickness of there coat, Either making it thinner or thicker which ever weather is appropriate. But your dog your choice, Just my opinion.

It is not really that stupid, I think alot of you are taking this out of context and expect something larger/more expensive than I have in mind, I am not planning on putting a full on 12000 BTU aircon cranked down to 19 24/7 with flat screen TV en suite bedrooms, more a small dog house with a 6000BTU occasionally switched on at peak heat times, ticks have become a reall problem lately and I would rather have them raised off the ground when sleeping.

I cannot let them come in and out as they please like they used to so much as I have a 2 month old baby, of course that will change as my son grows but for now I am just looking at solutions with very hot days which are coming soon here in Isaan.

Anyway I am planning on building something this week so for those of you who have`nt blown this out of proportion and think I am planning on building a 5 star penthouse for my dog, check back I will put some pics up.

The good dog food is also better than cheap human food. (And of course everyone can eat dog food, just not enough salt and not tasty).

My neighbor has 10 (or so) small dogs, which stay locked in the room for days sometimes weeks alone when there was the flood it was almost 2 month with only someone bring food (not removing the sh*t).

Something you may want to consider is AC is not good for an animal's respiratory system. Most AC dog houses I've seen are rarely used by the dogs. A shaded concrete slab seems to be the most popular with dogs. I don't know of many AC units smaller than 5000 BTUs, which are designed for 200 square feet. Put that in a even a large dog house and the air may get too dry. Hope this helps.

Well Rancid, if you feel that way, nothing to stop you donating whatever you want to the poor and downtrodden. Others will do as they see fit and take great care of their animals.

Over many years, I have seen so many "good causes" to help this lot or that lot of "poor displaced people around the world" Now many of those "poor displace souls" have grown fit and healthy enough to start running around killing and maiming other "poor displaced souls." How much of "Our Aid" went to people who are now members of ISIS etc.?

Sadly, the people you want to feed, will in many instances be only too happy to Bite The Hand That Fed them...or maybe chop it off.

I tend to doubt that the DOGS we are talking about building a decent Dog House for, will react the same way.

I suppose you would know about ISIl, as the west created them ,dont blame the poor. Others are greedy fecks and wouldn,t know FIT if it bit them. there are not many that has a coat as thick as ours,but he lives in a 5* property,full run of the house with access to the down stairs shower room and at night he sleeps with us on our bed[most of the time] with the aircon and a fan and the ticks.

I have to say i feel nauseous of the thought of a dog sleeping in someones bed . Never wiped its bottom or wiped after urinating, eats other dog mess ,seem humans being told to wash their hands after using the toilet seem a bit uneeded esp in your house . Absolutely filthy habit. Fleas and other parasites hopping about your bedclothes, dog hairs , dead dog skin etc. Anyone who lets a dog sleep with them is in need of a bit of proffesional help help. You only have friend that love your dog ? Not many friends then as the only person who loves any dog is the owner.

This post is obviously a troll as nobody except the mentally challenged would build an aircon house for a dog.

My wife is a techer in a poor village school with a classroom with a zinc roof and 3 small fans . No chairs or tables , fifteen 6/7yr olds. Stifling hot i am sure they would appreciate an aircon more than a mangy mutt. Better if you really love dogs as you say , do not have on in thanilad as it is an inhospitible place for domestic dogs.

Cheers Haha it is getting a bit amusing, I have had a few giggles from replies... I am going to have too start taking the piss soon, funniest thing is how annoyed some would get when they see what my dogs eat most days direct from the butchers, sometimes I get jealous and feel like a bite myself, they eat better than most thai`s!

Anyway, I am sure you guys who think this is a bad idea do not have two growing goldens running around who are constantly getting huge ticks all over them, I have tried pretty much everything including monthly front line and these ticks are not affected and really not nice, especially when ticks carry disease and you have a 2 month old baby. Ticks alone regardless of cooling the dogs down would be enough alone to make me require a decent dog hut, I personally think they are a great idea... Agreed aircon might be a bit over the top however as stated I was only considering a 5000-6000BTU very rarely turned on, although I am now considering the tornado fan for health reasons.

Poor peoples gardens dog mess hard and dry dogs never many medical problems except fleas mainly fed on dry biscuits and tins of dog meat . Rich peoples and silly dog lovers gardens , dog mess just a mound of runny horrible smelly dog faeces . Dog always have a bad stomach always in the vets , always sick and most die early Killed by their owners diet. Fed on human food including steakes pork , ice cream chocolate etc. Not good for dogs . Ice cream or choclate is one of the most obnoxious horrible food anyone could give a dog and will make a dogs life horrible but the nutters till do it thinking if they like it their dog must even though it could kill their dog .

Sleep with a dog or let it lick you. Disgusting . Hope you dog lovers never complain about dirty food places in thailand.

My pet hate a dog walking up to my kids and licking them in the face or sniffing my privates. 2nd pet hate the dog owners screaming when i kick their dog.

Not sure who you are having a dig at or if you just got out the wrong side of bed today however I do not feed my dogs chocolate/ice cream of anything else that is not healthy for them. Fresh pork/meat along side a good brand of dog food with alot of exercise is not bad at all for dogs so not sure where you got that from. My dogs are 100% fit and healthy and that is coming from the vet.

Also as for your comment on not owning a dog in Thailand I do not agree with that either, dogs are a great part of the family and teach kids some important life lessons on caring for animals regardless of the country you live in, not to mention they are a good deterrent for someone wishing to rob your house.

I've seen those portable ACs selling at Homepro and malls. They are not as cool as those standard AC units but I think that would be cool enough to cool a dog house.

You can also get a small fan and plug it into a timer that turns the fan on automatically in the afternoon each day, that would cost less than 1000 baht to do.
