Bangkok: – Of the popular Thai dishes served on Thai Airways International flights, stir fried chicken with basil leaves has highest greenhouse gas emission and chicken massaman curry has lowest carbon footprint.


The national carrier and Thailand Greenhouse Management Organisation (Public Organisation) have jointly carried out the study of carbon footprint caused by cooking Thai dishes, THAI president Charamporn Jotikasthira said.


The study is meant to raise awareness on clean development.


Each dish of stir fried chicken with basil leaves emits 1,320 grams of greenhouse gas, followed by chicken green curry with rice and sweet pork sausage (1,180 grams), chicken panang curry with rice and fried garlic kale (1040 grams) and chicken winter-melon curry with rice and fried garlic kale (964 grams).


Chicken massaman curry with rice and fried sugar pea emits 957 grams of greenhouse gas.


Charamporn said he has instructed the THAI food catering service to find ways reduce carbon footprint when cooking Thai dishes.


Starting next month, THAI food served on board will carry carbon label in order to remind passengers about environmental impacts.

Presently the catering service produces about 50,000 Thai dishes per day or 20 million dishes per year and each dish emits an average of 1,000 grams of greenhouse gas.


The carbon footprint on cooking is measured from greenhouse gas emitted from cooking, production and transportation of ingredients, work process related to the dishes and waste disposal.


THAI has launched the campaign to improve food served on board since November, striving to upgrade from three-star to five-star quality standard.


The numbers of food-related complaints have been downed by half following the food quality improvement.

but the political correct hypocrites can post that they ate the 964 gram CO2 instead of the 1300 gram food on facebook after their flight back to USA.

Best way to save CO2 (beside not flying) is to save weight and have a modern airplane.

If the greenies want to reduce CO2, they sequester themselves underground.

CO2 is food for plants, not a dangerous gas. Water vapor is a much more effective green house gas.

Unless you hire outside help. And you won't do that, will you?

Oh yes they could. Standard corporate operating procedure offers this original idea, (NOT) Hire a consultant and then blame everything on him, dismiss him & give yourself a raise. No, Thais would never do that 555 25 (followed by 25 (Yee-ha!)

I guess they are still cooking with charcoal on Thai Flights?

Perhaps they take into account the burning to clear the cornfield for the chicken feed, the production of the ferts, pesticides and herbicides, transportation, etc. etc. ?

If you include the food they gave the chicken which is farmed with fertilizer, made from oil. Transport the chicken with the truck. Serve them in some plastic that ends in the trash. The 500 gram also travel from Thailand to USA in the airplane.

1.32 kg carbon is realistic.

Yes that's true, {well almost, there are plenty of studies that show too much CO2 is actually bad for plants}, if only there were enough plants to absorb the amounts we are pumping out.

Mind that would mean an end to all the deforestation, destruction of greenbelt areas man is prone to.

Dear lord, who wants to do that.

Crank up the A/C while I drive 400 metres to buy some piece of crap I don't need.
