bdenner Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 It's called 'Speed Tape' see an example of it being used here! http://avherald.com/h?article=483688cc&opt=0
JAG Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Some years ago a pal of mine was sitting in a Landrover on a UK military training area. A Gazelle light helicopter landed nearby, and the crewman trotted over and asked if he had a roll of "black nasty" (slang for duct tape). As a good signaller my pal had, and obligingly handed some over. The Air Trooper thanked him, returned to his helo, applied the black nasty, waved, took off and bimbled away!
rice555 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Hello All, most line A&P's in the US can't rig a door, and we would be sent out on a field trip from the maintenance base, while on lay off from the carrier I worked for, I worked at Air California in Oakland CA. They had a 737 that took to much force to close the door. They had a mechanic fly for the day to open the door for the stew's, and fixed it when it came back after a day of flying. rice555
Popular Post Jangot Posted March 30, 2015 Popular Post Posted March 30, 2015 As bdenner notes, it is called "speed tape" - officially. Its use is perfectly legal in applications as approved/limited by the aircraft Maintenance Manual and Structure Repair Manual. It is only ever a short term temporary fix for non-structural items such as fairings and panels. Its use on the Flap Track Fairing in the above picture looks to be perfectly OK. It will not be there to hold the aft part of the fairing on, but to cover the gap between the forward and aft parts. Correctly, the gap will be filled with Aerodynamic Sealent, to smooth the airflow and prevent turbulance and prevent moisture ingress (moisture in the joint would freeze at altitude and delaminate the composite fairing.. However, if the fairing was removed during short ground time (perhaps to inspect after a bird strike or check something internal to the fairing) there will be no time to apply the sealant and wait 8 hours for it to cure hard. Hence the tape to seal it. Hope that information may put folk's mind at rest next time they see a patch of shiny tape on an aircraft. 3
Popular Post gchurch259 Posted March 30, 2015 Popular Post Posted March 30, 2015 Airlines do not stock a lot of parts at out lying stations and have to ship the part and a mechanic to fix the problem. Nothing unusual about that. 3
Lupatria Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Why didn't anyone tell the Thais, Kamikaze is out of fashion even in Japan.
hawksway Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Bit short on facts. Was this one of the new Bombardier planes similar to the one which Nok Air had a problem shutting the rear door causing a delay to all on board including big wigs?
wooloomooloo Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Six hours delay on Nok isn't a big deal. Try AirAsia, much more reliable.
MAZ3 Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 My friends Dad was a BA Concord engineer and one was damaged in Dubai(I believe),they used High Speed tape and flew it home!. Sub-sonic and without passengers I think. Perfectly safe
Whyamiandwhatamidoinghere Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I liked Nokair until I flew from upon ratchthani to bkk. The pilot circled three times before informing us that the plane was unable to land due to visibility. Passengers were stressed noticing we were turning left all the time. Imagine what would be going through our minds if this was posy mh370 and Germanwings. I made a complaint to nok but never received a response. My second complaint was when flying to upon ratchthani and not flight was late. The nok gate stewardess didn't look at identification. They only tore off their portion of the boarding pass.

samsensam Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 was flying to chaing mai last year with nok air. the flight was delayed by the authorities, we were told, due to lack of visability over CM. as we sat patiently waiting two air asia flights took off for... chaing mai. when we arrived in CM i asked friends if there had been smoke or fog over CM that morning, no there hadn't. 1
Jdietz Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 My friends Dad was a BA Concord engineer and one was damaged in Dubai(I believe),they used High Speed tape and flew it home!. Sub-sonic and without passengers I think. Perfectly safe So it should be re-branded 'sub-sonic tape' as now we have a clear speed limit to its application. 1
