Nakhon Hat Yai municipality in Songkhla has won the World Wildlife Federation's National Earth Hour Capital 2015 - held as part of the WWF's Earth Hour City Challenge global campaign.

The southern municipality will be represented at awards ceremony on Thursday as part of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives' World Congress 2015 in Seoul.

Now in its third year, the year-long competition saw 163 cities - including Nakhon Khon Kaen municipality and Tambon Mapammarit municipality in Chumpon's Pathiu district - take up the challenge of submitting inspiring and credible urban development plans to dramatically increase the city's use of renewable energy and meet the carbon Climate Registry standard.

Hat Yai - which presented measures such as turning organic waste into fertiliser and producing diesel from used cooking oil - was among 44 finalists and was announced as a sustainability leader of Thailand. The Seoul ceremony will also see one global Earth Hour City honoured.

We seldom get power cuts in Hat Yai Nai, the power supply can be rather spiky but it doesn't go off that often.

I guess living close to the Amphur and the police station has some advantages.
