If you have a child in Thailand and own a car then read this

Featured Replies

This morning the wife told me about a news item on TV which related to a thai man accidentally reversing over his child and killing it. I will spare you the gory details but the father was obviously distraught at what he saw and then committed suicide. Its obviously a tragic story and may they both RIP.

If you are a family man and own a car please be careful when driving with little ones around.

cheers

It happens in many countries in the world and not just in Thailand.

You don't even have to be a family man for it to happen, just anywhere around children.

My Wife also told me of this story yesterday, a slightly different ending in that after reverse parking the car, the infant running out and getting caught under the wheels and killed, after seeing the tragic consequence the father immediately attempted to take his own life but failed.

Such a tragic story....

I somewhat disagree with the title of the thread though - It should read "Anyone who Drives - Please Read This"... it could be someone else child running out...

In short, never be complacent... Kids get everywhere and the younger they are the less awareness of dangerous circumstances they have.

Solution. Parking sensors front and back. Reverse cam.

many people back into a open parking place just so they will have a view of what is in their path of movement when they leave the parking spot .I have a habit of walking around the vehicle prior to reversing out of a drive/parking spot at my or any residense.

little ones, pets, children hiding from others as a game, etc are potential death situations which for the most part can be eliminated by keeping your mind on the business of driving or preparing to drive a mass of metal that can kill/injure.

One upon a time.........bought a car and went to Phuket to find a place to rent. Arriving at the hotel, in a small soi, a young little kid walked from behind a car on the road. I saw the kid on time and put my foot on the brake immediately whilst driving 15 km /hour. Pffeeewww I thought. Saw the distress on the woman her face supposed to look after the kid. Later I rang my wife and told her what happened. As the convo went on she told me that she went with our 5 month old son on the back of her sisters motorbike to the hospital that same day. I was gobsmacked.

2 To Tango.. Parental Responsibility, and Driver Care...... But as a Parent i feel "Blame the Driver" is a Cop Out here, more so than in the West.

Agreed.

Nothing in this tragic case that doesn't happen elsewhere.

I'm driving cars now for almost 40 years and believe that I know a little about driving on the right, but also on the left lane.

Whenever I reverse, I turn my head around to make sure that there's no child, dog, cat, or anything else.

I'm always amazed how some people reverse by using the mirrors. OMG.....

Can't even imagine if that would happen to me. I don't think I could live with it. No, I could not.

I truly feel so sorry for all involved and it's something which is hard to understand, whatever god you're believing.

If this thread will only save one life, it did the job. Great for pointing that out.

Please here's another one, that happened to me, last time in Germany. People get used to things and something in your brain takes over when you're driving a car for such a long time.

I was so used to the traffic in Thailand, that I almost made a roundabout on the freaking left side. Good luck was that my brother has a driving school and it happened with one of his company cars with pedals on both sides. Lucky me....OMG....

I wasn't speeding, but without his warning, I'd have taken the wrong way, not knowing anything. And I've seen an accident in north Pattaya, maybe 18 years ago, where two guys got killed, because the German driver didn't get it.

He though the traffic would come from the other side, didn't see them coming and cashed into the motorbike. blink.png

Saw them dying on the spot and also felt very sorry for the German driver.

Warning each other is very important to avoid serious accidents. Thanks for sharing. wai2.gif

Its important to educate young children about any place where cars are ... not just roads. My daughter isn't allowed on the drive when anyone's car engine is on. She has also been taught to walk on the most protected side of parents when in places where cars are parked.

This has been drilled into her since she gained comprehension and she has also been told the reasons why and had visibility of her size as a child explained. Quite OTT I know but it is a worry of mine driving a MU7
