Crime Woman Arrested for Running Teen Trafficking Ring Behind Udon Thani Karaoke Bar
Picture courtesy of Khaosod A 46-year-old woman was apprehended for using a karaoke bar in Udon Thani as a facade for trafficking teenagers. Sirijanya was arrested after allegedly recruiting three 16-year-old girls into prostitution, pocketing a commission of 300 baht each time. Acting on the orders of Police Major General Songklot Gerkkritaya, a task force led by Police Colonel Sarawut Chantawong and Police Lieutenant Colonel Saksit Nilmith detained Sirijanya. The arrest unfolded at the karaoke venue in Ban Dung subdistrict, Udon Thani province, where unlawful activities had been taking place. Initial investigations revealed the troubling involvement of minors at the karaoke bar. Undercover operations were set up, revealing the exploitation. Agents discovered the girls offering services for 1,500 baht each, with transactions facilitated by Sirijanya. The sting operation advanced to a nearby resort, where they apprehended the girls after receiving payment. At that moment, officers moved in, seizing Sirijanya along with 4,300 baht in cash, which confirmed her role in the illegal scheme. During questioning, Sirijanya admitted to owning the establishment and orchestrating the prostitution of minors. She confessed to keeping 300 baht from each fee of 1,500 baht, distributing the rest to the girls as payment. The young victims, named only as A, B, and C, were taken into care by appropriate agencies, ensuring their safety and welfare after the ordeal. In a related incident, authorities recently cracked down on a massage parlour in Mueang district, Lop Buri, for similar illegal activities. Disguised as customers, police officers investigated and uncovered prostitution services offered alongside massages. Police Major General Songkrod Krikkritaya ordered this raid, leading to the arrest of 30-year-old Wilaiwan. She faces charges for soliciting prostitution and operating a brothel, underlining an ongoing fight against human trafficking and exploitation in the region. This series of arrests indicates a significant effort by law enforcement to clamp down on human trafficking networks and ensure the protection of minors across the country. Picture courtesy of Daily News A Brazilian couple has been arrested at Samui International Airport after authorities discovered nearly 7 kilograms of cocaine concealed in their luggage. The seized narcotics have an estimated street value of over 20 million baht. The suspects, identified as Mr. Diego Dos Santos Silva 35 and Ms. Fernanda Grebriel Lorenço De Andre 25, were apprehended by a joint task force comprising Customs officers, Bo Phut Police, immigration officials from Surat Thani (Samui) and airport security personnel. Officers found 6.63 kilograms of cocaine hidden among clothing and personal items in their suitcase. The pair have been charged with importing a Category 2 narcotic (cocaine) and were taken to Bo Phut Police Station for further legal proceedings. During initial questioning, the couple stated it was their first time in Thailand. They had flown from Brazil, transited in Qatar and arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport around 09:00 before continuing on to Samui, landing at 10:30 the same day. They claimed they had been offered a free holiday to Koh Samui, including flights, accommodation, food and excursions, by a fellow Brazilian man, in exchange for bringing a suitcase into Thailand. According to the suspects, they were told someone would collect the bag upon their arrival, and they would receive 35,000 Brazilian reais (approximately 200,000 baht) as payment. Authorities noted that the suspects were uncooperative during questioning and struggled to communicate in English. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to identify other members of the drug trafficking network and bring them to justice. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-07-21 -

Accident Tourists Survive Boat Tragedy, Guide Dies
Picture courtesy of Amarin TV A long-tail boat capsized in the Ratchaprapa Dam, Surat Thani, yesterday, claiming the life of a tour guide while 16 foreign tourists and the captain miraculously survived. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. amid strong waves, according to Provincial Tourist Police. The ill-fated boat rescued five Belgians, 11 Dutch tourists, and the captain safely. Tragically, the female tour guide, Ms. Thasawan Phonlakhon, 44, drowned after hitting her head on the boat. Local residents claim this area, known as Chong Nam Khao, has a history of similar incidents, especially during rainy, windy conditions due to the small size of these boats. Police Inspector Pol. Lt. Col. Phattharin Suthiphattham has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. Residents warn that many tourists have previously drowned or gone missing here, highlighting ongoing safety concerns. Ratchaprapa Dam, with its stunning scenery, draws over 70,000 visitors annually. Known as Thailand’s Guilin, the site features dramatic limestone landscapes reminiscent of the famous Chinese city, attracting tourists worldwide. Emergency services responded quickly; however, the tragedy has once again highlighted the need for stringent safety measures at this popular tourist destination. The incident highlights the lifeguard and rescue team’s roles in ensuring visitors' safety despite challenging weather conditions. Authorities are now urging tour operators to enforce stricter safety protocols in order to prevent future tragedies. This latest event underscores the unpredictable nature of water travel in the area and the importance of being vigilant at all times. As investigations continue, the focus remains on enhancing safety to protect the vibrant tourist industry that thrives on Ratchaprapa Dam's natural beauty. The loss of Ms. Phonlakhon serves as a sorrowful reminder of the potential dangers faced on these picturesque waters. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai Newsroom 2025-07-21
