PATTANI - A commander of the Thai army admitted yesterday that a military intelligence unit had mistakenly identified a summer lesson at a Muslim school in the restive province of Pattani as a terrorist conference.

The admission came after soldiers raided the religious school, which locates in the Pattani's office of Central Islamic Committee of Thailand (CICOT), on 14 April. A Muslim cleric told reporters that the soldiers said they received reports that 30 "terrorists" were gathering at the madras to plan new attacks against the authorities in late April, but the school was in fact hosting a lesson for Muslim students on summer vacation.

The cleric, Waedueramae Mamingi, told reporters on 15 April that he was upset by the "rude" behavior of the soldiers, who reportedly pushed their way into the classrooms and took photos of the staff without permission, though no arrest was made in the raid.

"Such action amounts to intimidation," said Waedueramae, who is chairman of CICOT in Pattani, "I am saddened by the information and attitude of officers from some units that don't adhere to policy [of reconciliation] issued by Commander of the Fourth Region Army. I think I will need to discuss with the commander about such allegation, in order to solve problem in the region. I believe the mistake was caused by prejudice of the operatives, and the lack of filtering of information."

Waedueramae added that he was surprised about the raid because CICOT has already informed local police about the annual summer courses. "We want to encourage children to use their free time in a beneficial way, instead of behaving in any inappropriate way," the cleric said.

And these are the people who have decided it is them who should be running the country. Sounds about right..

Well yes and no. Let's rewind about 6 months and remind ourselves that they had the not so tacit support of the old brigade, including the yellows, the dems, the BKK "elite" and every other establishment in Thailand... so they were somewhat assisted in their decision. It is only now that the support among TVF users (and probably the general public - if you were allowed to ask such a question) is denied. How many people here were supportive of the junta initially? Many...

Between this and huge military protected brothels, Prayuths boys really are doing their best to piss off the muslims in the South,

So what? Who gives a sh**. They are always angry and unhappy. It is part of their religion to be a complaining victim. In Europe and the UK no matter how much we give them they want more. The army actually did the right thing. Such meetings are often a cover muslim for extremists. If they are not happy they can go and live in Malaysia or Pakistan.

Who gives a sh**? Their mothers, fathers, siblings, children... wake up and grow a heart. At least the soldiers didn't go in shooting innocent people like the last time... or is that why you are unhappy?

Okay, okay, stop laughing at the Thais. This type of nonsense is also sometimes being done by the authorities in England and America.

And the Thai army has admitted this, so give them credit for being honest and open enough to admit it.

Well, first off, you have the total oxymoron: "...military intelligence unit". Once you understand what a joke that is, the rest of the story makes sense.

For Sure! Time to bring back Colonel Pong Sing,,, Now I wonder why he took early retirement ????

These abuses of the military and its partners paramilitary security forces will continue to increase due to the overall increasing paranoia of the coup leadership and lack of any civilian government moderation on military behavior. The military will do more to radicalize Malay-Thais than insurgents. So much for the military's Thung Yang Daeng model to pacify the South.

"Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has said the government's handling of violence in the deep South was more effective because it had been carried out in an integrated manner under a road map worked out under his guidelines." Maybe Prayut was using the roadmap for Chiang Mai or he had it upside down..

It happens ever where, getting information to the right people who need it is always difficult.

Coordination and knowing what is going on in your area of responsibility seems lacking.

As always they don't talk, only "Knee Jerk" reactions to unreliable reports from unreliable sources.

It seems that way all over the world now a days.

In these dangerous and uncertain times meetings, gatherings, festivals ect need to be confirmed with relevant and responsibly authorities.

Again no one talks, everyone assumes that everyone else knows.

This is a world wide problem, not only a Thai problem.

It would seem that "in-charge" person needs to get his shit together.

This type of mistake should not happen, send your representatives to these gatherings.

Offer assistance when it is needed, get to know the community and what is happening.

TALK and be friendly, it works!

This behavior has been going on in the South for a long time.

Influential people are loosing power, and they don't like it. (Central Samui).

They have been the scape goats long enough!

Good. Maybe just one of the brainwashed children will wonder why they are so disliked and leave their cult of violence.

Why do you use an avatar of a movie-star? Does is give you a sense that you are an important person somehow?
