Goji berries are described as "natural Viagra" and are already a hit in the US, with fans said to include fitness freak Madonna. The small red fruit, grown in the Himalayas, contains 500 times more vitamin C than oranges. Its taste is a cross between a cherry and a cranberry and it has five times more iron than an average steak. But the recommended daily intake is only 20g. David Cooke, of Tesco, who will be the first major I supermarket to stock goji in the UK, said: "The goji is so packed full of nutrients it is in a acompletely different league to acclaimed super-foods such as blueberries, blackcurrants, oily fish and broccoli. "As functional foods go, it is possibly the most beneficial of them all." He said recent research showed the goji had more beta-carotene - which helps fight heart disease -than carrots, while its high levels of polysaccharides stimulate the immune system. Cooke, who is in charge of buying wholefoods for Tesco, added: "Goji is currently one of the hottest new food trends sweeping America. "We found out about the berries while we were researching functional foods as there is a growing demand for them now in Britain. "They are an ancient Himalayan health phenomenon. "But they have remained one of the area's best-kept secrets because of the remoteness of the region. "The area's climate and altitude allows the berry to grow in unique conditions and it is only now that the Western world is beginning to find out about the many herbs, nutrients and natural medicines that exist there." Chinese health experts have raved about the berries' ability to rev up someone's sex drive for years.
