I would like to order some new furniture from Italy and have it shipped to Thailand. The company in Italy will ship it but I'm not sure what exactly I will have to do to get it out of customs and how much it will cost. I understand the thai import tax will be around 30% calculated on the price plus shipping cost and vat will be added to that price. The cost of the furniture will be around 50k euro.

Has anyone ever done this and did any problems occur at the Thai side? We're there any unexpected charges and did customs give you any grief.

Thanks

50k Euro = 1.75 mil Baht

1.75m baht + Shipping = ? x 30% x7% Vat. as an approximation only.

Customs will be shaking with anticipation of a great pay day when you arrive.

For that sort of dough you could have solid hardwood furniture custom made here, no duties or taxes.

If you have fixed ideas what you want, show the local chippie some pictures.

Unfortunately it's not possible to have them made here. would I need to hire a local import agency to do the paperwork for customs? And would I be better to ship it in my wife's thai name rather than my name or does it make no difference?

One of the sponsors on this forum is a shipping agent...

They seem to be advertising shipping FROM Thailand, but it might be worth an email or private message to them to get an opinion from a professional.

My personal experience from 11 years ago - Furniture and other household goods shipped from the UK to Thailand in my wife's name (Thai citizen returning to Thailand after 5 years in the UK). Most of our goods should have been free of duties and taxes but we were stung with a 20,000 Baht "inspection fee". The truth is that I do not know whether this was a scam by customs or a scam by the Thai shippers. I paid anyway, otherwise our goods would have been held up.

Someone else I know had the same experience but he said that the "inspection fee" was a "NO inspection fee" - who knows?

Crazy idea to ship new furniture to Thailand, not matter in who's name it is shipped

You have no idea whatsoever of the duty you will be required to pay until it gets here. And don't even think that the "estimate" on the Thai Royal Customs web page will give you a clue since you are going to have to pay whatever duty the customs agent assigned to your shipment says you will pay especially if it is new from a factory. You will pay VAT in Italy, and you will pay VAT again here plus duty

To give you an idea of what it is like I had to pay duty on a rosewood display case that was manufactured and bought here in Thailand, had shipped to another country and returned here, when I retired

As dirty Harry says: are you feeling luck today
