For a long time I have obtained my one year multi-entry non immigrant visas from Penang. Does anyone know if such visas can be granted in Phnom Penh? If not I shall just stagger down to Penang as usual!

I got a new one, as i missed my yearly extension / retirement due to travel, in Penang without the slightest problem. In fact they offered me a multiple if I liked and it was the most friendly and quick service I have ever received in a Thai consulate. They must have been Malaysians servicing the counter/window :-).

Even the security guard was greeting everybody and inquired if all went well for me. I was quite amazed. Due to fraudulent agent practices you will have to go in person, no longer can you just drop off your passport with a visa-agent. This goes for Non-Immigrant I was told. Best bring copy & original of Thai bankbook. Good luck. MS>

What type of non immigrant visa have you been getting. If a non-b Penang is your only choice.

Phnom Penh do not do multiple entry visas,

If you are getting multiple entry non-o visas based upon marriage you can get one in Savannakhet Laos with no financial proof.

My Non-Im Ed visa expires next month. I'm going to get a Non-ImO based on marriage (I used to have a Non-Im for marriage but foolishly let it lapse while traveling). Do I have to leave the country to do so?

If so, Suvannakhet sounds great even though I live in Chiang Mai because I'd love to avoid the hassle of the all-day application process with my wife having to take off work. I mean, if I have leave the country anyway why not get it done and avoid the big application day three months later. Just fly to Suvannakhet via BKK and I'm set for a year?

Edit: Of course, I know I'd still have to go to Immigration every three months to extend but that's a piece of cake, right?

You can with the correct paperwork obtain a multi -entry "NON O " visa based on marriage which provides 90 day entries for a year.

There are no 3 month extensions available !

But you seem to be in control !smile.png

Do you really understand that at least every 90 days you'll have to leave the country - not show up at immigration?

What? Are you sure? That would suck.

I see. That's too bad. I have one more question. To change from a non-O Ed to Non-O for marriage do I need to leave the country?

I've just done some more reading and see that it's case by case, or mood by mood. I'll have my wife call tomorrow.

You can get a multiple entry Non O based on marriage in Savannahket. That will give you 90 days, then either leave and come back for another 90 days, or extend by 60 days based on visiting your wife. You will have to exit after that extra 60 days though, which will put you back on another 90 day stamp.

So, with the Savannahket visa I'd get almost 15 months if I leave at least every 90 days, including on one of the last days of validity at the end of the year?

My wife called Chiang Mai Immigration this morning. They say I have to leave the country to get a single entry non o for marriage.

It might, in fact, be theoretically possible (subject to what the experts on here say) to do a non-O conversion in country, but this would probably require 2 trips to Bangkok since only Chaengwattana Immigration can sanction such conversions these days, I believe.

So, as already suggested, a more practical option in your case would be travel to Savannakhet for a fresh non-O. In this connection, it would appear that you could fly there direct from CNX instead of via BKK - see http://ca.jetradar.com/flights/Savannakhet-ZVK-to-Chiang-Mai-CNX/

Along with my last question I have one more; mlast I promise. could I do the in and out at Mae Sai/?Tachilek every 90 days? Could someone please give me a good answer right away because if I can't do this I need to keep my American Consulate appointment in an hour.

Ojas -- That's a two airline trip.

He can get a single entry non-o in Vientiane. Fly Chiang Mai to Udon Thani then a van to the bridge in Nong Khai.

Savannakhet for a multiple entry non-o yes. Fly to Udon Thani and then a bus to Mukdahan is an option.

Is this visa valid for one year? In other words, will it do me for nearly 15 months and if so, would Mae Sai work as a border run?

It is a visa for an unlimited number of entries into Thailand within one year of the issue date of the visa and on each entry you get permission to stay for 90 days. Entry can be made at any border entry point.

I'm all set for my trip. Fly to Udon Thani from Chiang Mai on Nok Air Mon the 25th, arriving in UT at 5:10pm, which I thought was great, letting me avoid an early morning flight, but it means a night in UT because it appears there are no buses (that I can find) that leave in the evening. Even if there's a VIP bus it'll be sold out and I can't buy a ticket in CM because it's different bus companies. No problem--I gave myself an extra day just in case. I'll take a bus the next morning to Mukdahan, spend the night there, and cross the border and go straight to the consulate the next morning, the 27th, which is the last day of my Ed visa validity.

I know I promised no more questions but I lied. Even though I will leave Thailand on the last day of my Ed visa validity, should I still get a letter of cancellation from my language school?

Mission accomplished. Documents submitted:

Original marriage certificate, which they looked at and immediately returned

Copies signed by my wife:

1) her ID

2) marriage certificate

3) document of last name change to mine

4) document of first name change (which she did recently, no relevance to most people here)

5) name page of house book (tabien baan)

Copies signed by me:

photo page of my passport X2

Oh, and 5,000 baht and two photos of course.

I was told to come back the next day at 2, which I did, and got my passport without a hitch. It's multiple entry Non O based on marriage so I'm good for almost 15 months. Back at the border and having gone through Lao and Thai Immigration there were no taxis or buses, just a couple of dozen people like me standing there. I asked a Thai man who asked an official and a senior looking Thai official appeared and motioned me to follow him. So while several other officers looked surprised and motioned to me that I was in the wrong place, I followed the officer through the building and out to his pickup truck. A few minutes after getting going and chatting he told me 100 baht. Haha, cool. I was going to the bus station to reserve a bus for the next day but I found out that's not possible but I did get a schedule written out for me. I took a mini bus at 8:15 the next morning with a relatively unsuicidal driver and arrived back in Udon Thani at 12:37. I had several other encounters on this little trip that either put a smile on my face or deepened my understanding of Laos but I'll stop here since this isn't the travel forum.

I applied for the visa on the 27th. I discovered to my horror that I'd forgotten to do a 90-day report by the 24th on my Ed visa but at Immigration leaving Thailand not a word was said. At the consulate I got a one-sentence scolding, but without repercussions. I don't recommend being this slack; once in a while you just get away with one, though.

Backing up a bit, I was fortunate enough to get a ride from a family friend all the way from Udon Thani in a car. We left at 4am and arrived at the border a few minutes before Thai Immigration opened at 8. I paid in baht, 1,500. Someone in line said there's a bank next to immigration where we could convert some baht to kip and save a few hundred baht on the Laos visa but I couldn't be bothered. I met an English woman and we shared a taxi to the consulate, 150 baht iirc. The consulate opens at 9am so we had to wait a while but once in we were done in no time, but long enough to get good and sweaty.

It was so hot and sunny. I borrowed a bicycle that was kindly offered at the guesthouse and rode to the big market a few clicks away in search of Dao coffee or, better yet, Trung Nguyen, but all I could find was 3 in 1 coffee, which is instant. Strange, because in Vientiane a few years ago I found all the coffee I wanted, both Lao and Vietnamese. I finally found a duty free shop in the middle of town that had one kind of coffee Dao but it was the equivalent of 366 baht for 500 grams. Next time I'll definitely take an umbrella for sun protection. It's brutal, and I like to walk around and meet people instead of sitting on my ass staring at a little screen (there's plenty of time for that at night : -- )
