Bangkok is only 5 feet above sea level

Featured Replies

Its not just Bangkok, many other cities around the world are in the same position. What matters is if the government is proactively trying to plan and defend the city to prevent possible flooding like the Dutch and Japanese folks have been doing.

  • That's an established fact. The sea level doesn't even have to rise, Bangkok is itself is sinking. Has to do with tectonic, Continental drifts etc.

Bangkok is only 5 feet above sea level Just like my wife exactly

  • The Thai government was advised on this many years ago and ignored the issue. The people on the other hand are securing land and building houses outside of Bangkok waiting for the floods to come,

Here's a seal level map you can play with: http://geology.com/sea-level-rise/

Even at 1 meter (which could also be a sinking of the city by half meter + equal sea level rise) costal Bangkok is in trouble, and there is lots of localized puddling in the southern & eastern areas. Compare that to the 2011 flood map below, where it was mostly the northern part of the city and outer suburbs that suffered:

Actually the 2011 flood was a major disaster for most of the country and had little to do with Bangkok and sea levels other than most exit to the sea required the waters to flow through the city and at such low elevations water does not flow very fast.

If Bkk floods, don't come and make Korat city the new Bkk, like they said....don't need all you soap stars and movie stars living here! Shit, did i say that out loud, no room at the Inn, sorry.

That would be the most sensible idea, though. Pick several other cities and develop them a lot, while trying to stop further sinking in Bangkok. After a while, there will be less and less need for Bangkok anyway. And fi they find a solution to completely protect Bangkok, then great.

Korat would be perfect, by the way. Probably Udon too. And Khon Kaen.

If those 3 places were built up to the equivalent of Bangkok, the Bangkok population would drop by about 80%

Problem solved. Haven't even finished my first Archa yet.

But don't come where I am. tongue.png

By the way, if Bangers does become the new Atlantis, our sleepy Isaan cities are gonna be a whole lot more crowded. Probably with hookers and taxi drivers, so let's not complain, lol, sorry.

In fact, scrap the 1st idea. The 2nd one is better. Let her sink.

Bangkok is sinking and the sea level is rising. The erosion of the polar ice has had significant impact on many places around the world. But it seems forgotten that Bangkok was originally the "Venice of the East" not so long ago. Maybe to return to that would be a viable concept? I use the underground system but nowI can't help wondering "what if the pumps stop? " !

What do Russia and China have to say abut this? I'm sure the new BFF will lend their help on this, not a problem.

Would a submerged Bangkok...be a bad thing?

Yes, for Pattaya. There are more than enough Bangkokians visiting during the weekend - we don't want them here full time. Pattaya during the floods of 2013 was a traffic nightmare of epic proportions.

Sounds good.. I cant wait to have a water front condo.

The Thai's should hire some Dutch drainage experts to sort out Bangkok's perennial flooding problems.

A bit like the Brits did with Cornelius Vermuyden when they were draining the fens in the 17th century.

We had this problem with WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL many years ago. A diver went down and after many months stopped it sinking using concrete . England
