Pope calls Palestinian leader "angel of peace" during visit
NICOLE WINFIELD, Associated Press

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis praised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as an "angel of peace" during a meeting Saturday at the Vatican that underscored the Holy See's warm relations with the Palestinians as it prepares to canonize two 19th century nuns from the region.

Francis made the compliment during the traditional exchange of gifts at the end of an official audience in the Apostolic Palace. He presented Abbas with a medallion and explained that it represented the "angel of peace destroying the bad spirit of war."

Francis said he thought the gift was appropriate since "you are an angel of peace." During his 2014 visit to Israel and the West Bank, Francis called both Abbas and Israeli President Shimon Peres men of peace.

Abbas is in Rome for the canonization Sunday of two 19th-century nuns from what was then Ottoman-ruled Palestine. The new saints, Mariam Bawardy and Marie Alphonsine Ghattas, are the first from the region to be canonized since the early days of Christianity.

Church officials are holding up the new saints as a sign of hope and encouragement for Christians in the Middle East at a time when violent persecution from Islamic extremists has driven many Christians from the region of Christ's birth.

In a statement Saturday, Abbas praised the two new saints as inspirational models for today's Palestinians and urged their fellow Christians to remain in the region.

"We call on Palestinian Christians to stay with us and enjoy the rights of full and equal citizenship, and bear with us the difficulties of life until we achieve liberty, sovereignty and human dignity," he said.

Abbas' visit comes days after the Vatican finalized a bilateral treaty with the "state of Palestine" that made explicit its recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The Vatican said it had expressed "great satisfaction" over the new treaty during the talks with the Palestinian delegation. It said the pope, and later the Vatican secretary of state, also expressed hopes that direct peace talks with Israel would resume.

"To this end, the wish was reiterated that with the support of the international community, Israelis and Palestinians may take with determination courageous decisions to promote peace," a Vatican statement said.

It added that interreligious dialogue was needed to combat terrorism.

Israel didn't comment on Francis' "angel of peace" compliment but complained that Abbas was using the trip to score political points.

"It is regrettable that Mahmoud Abbas uses international forums to attack Israel and refrains from returning to negotiations which is the right way to implement a political vision and a solution of peace," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon.

Israel earlier had expressed its "disappointment" that the Vatican officially recognized the state of Palestine in the treaty, which covers the activities of the Catholic Church in Palestinian territory.

Not being "an Israeli Lobby" I am afraid that Papa of all Catholics has lost all proportions of real faith, decency and good taste.

If Abbas is an Angel then I must be pissing ambrosia and excreting chocolate.

Really, there must be a limit? Unless this Papa is a Mamma again?biggrin.png

Note: Not even mentioning Israel!

Note: Please, remind me the name and confession of the last Pope assassin!

Yeah, sure ... Abbas is an Angel of Peace and Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Price. That's Barack DRONE Obama to you.

Next ...

Well ISIS also claims to be doing gods work, so as they say God works in mysterious ways

The Israeli lobby not out of bed yet???

They are probably waiting for the self-avowed atheists and the Muslims to show up and swear that Catholicism is now the real deal.

You're forgetting Putin (KGB) going to Synagogue with Saint Kyrill's permission and Castro (Commie) ready to kiss the slipper.

IMHO any Religion is fine until it becomes Institutionalized! If God exists she must be keeping away from those "Stables of God" and their operators.

Correction.

Abbas is an Angel of Peace and Arafat is the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

No wonder if the Peace Prize itself is coming as a set with a Dynamite stick... a kind of a Scandinavian Twist.

Abbas has no mandate any more, nor the PA has a parliament or a legislative body to govern the territories

as the all were sacked years ago, the PA has no one to talk to and no elections are planned as they fear that

Hamas will all seats in the west bank as they did some years back..

The lights are on at the PA house, but nobody is home...

Apparently The Pope has been invited to come to the US in September 2015.

He will be a guest-speaker in :

- Washington DC : White House and the Congress

- New York: UN

- Philadelphia

- California

Why all this hysteria ? The Vatican UN recognition of the State of Palestine was done in 2012. The interstate official recognition without UN interference just happened now. The next step is the cooperation between both nations to improve conditions for the Palestinian Christian community in occupied territories like in any other place in the World...

I don't see any hysteria here but if Abbas is really an "angel of peace" then I'm the bloody Count of Monte Cristo. whistling.gif

The reality is that Abbas is very unpopular with his own people and powerful or not if he did what was really needed to be a REAL Angel of Peace, his own people would quickly murder him.

Such as approaching Israel with a new approach.

Accepting the existence of Israel.

Accepting the reality that Israel needs to have a majority Jewish character.

Accepting that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Totally rejecting Hamas and everything it stands for.

Giving up for good on Arab demands of right of return into Israel.

Giving up for good the obvious real long term goal of all Palestinian leadership in general ... to take over all of Israel and kick out the Jews.

Realizing the quickest path to peace and prosperity for his own people is dealing with Israel directly with this new approach.

Yes the Arabs would call this surrender and kill him ... but it's more like the quickest path to a reasonable and peaceful two state solution.

He would then really be an Angel of Peace, But a dead one.

Lol...You're talking about peace 100% on Israel's terms....which is ridiculously unreasonable and will never happen.

Abbas may not be just the Angel of Peace but the Savior of Israel.

He is willing to discuss real peace in a just 2 state solution. He is getting quite old now. Israel may not find anyone more amenable than him to negotiate with.

The alternative to negotiations is for the Palestinians to keep their heads down, practise passive resistance, and shame the Israel before the world by flooding the social media with images of their daily humiliations, beatings and murders from the IDF and fanatical Zionist settlers under a 48 year illegal occupation now.

Meanwhile just continue to breed and make Israel's problem grow.

Time, history and world opinion is on the side of the Palestinians.

There are very reasonable demands the Palestinians could make and they could be met IF they give up their unreasonable demands and obvious long term goals of ending Israel. Such as ending the west bank settlements, Israel's help in building their new economy (they would make incredible trading partners if peace broke out), even just compensation / limited return for those with valid provable claims. Israel has swung to the right and no wonder but with a sea change in Palestinian attitudes towards the existence of Israel, that could easily change. OK, back to the real world, talking here about something that will take at least a generation, but right now there isn't even a start.

Everything you said is true, but there is the big IF.

IF they really wanted peace, this IF is also influenced by outside forces.

So, unless something major happens, i doubt the problems would be solved any time soon

You're spot on except for the last part. History is not on the side of the Palestinians as there is no such thing as a Palestinian - although a perceived history allowing only for the 100 years or so of manipulated facts, is on the side of the Gazans. Interesting stuff though..

Abbas is President of the PA. A week ago the PA handed plaques to the families of the three Gazan terrorists who murdered the two reservists in 2000. He is a real proper "angel of peace". Not.
