Thai Premier welcomes Fijian leader, eyes strengthening economy and trade

BANGKOK, 25 May 2015 (NNT) - Thailand and Fiji expressed keen interests in strengthening economic ties and increasing the volume of two-way trade.

At Government House, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha extended an overwhelming welcome to Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimara who is on an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand.

The Fijian Premier was accompanied by two ministers – the minister for agriculture and the minister for fisheries and forestry – who will seek cooperation on various issues from the Thai side.

Gen Prayut said Thailand always deems Fiji as a close and important economic partner as well as gateway to other Pacific Island countries. Fiji is also a main importer of Thai consumer goods and has high growth potential in terms of construction, tourism, and public utility. The Thai Premier also proposed that both countries increase the number of flights and two-way trade values.

Currently, Thai exports to Fiji are automobile and parts, plastic resin, and sugar. Thailand’s trade surplus with Fiji is 49 million US dollars.

Thailand and Fiji have promoted their diplomatic ties since December 15, 1975. The two nations have exchanged visits of high-ranking officials on many occasions. In addition, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn paid a visit to the island country in 1996.

Prayut will try to buy Fijii's vote for UN Security Council membership. Maybe pay in rice and rubber.

What a vivid imagination Thaksin fans have. Everyone must be into bribery, corruption, "persuasion" because Thaksin was and he never ever did anything wrong.

Tiresome, just like the same old Shin rhetoric Thaksin the non political spewed in Korea.

It would need a major effort of imagination and possibly paranoia to drag a reference to Thaksin into a report on a meeting between the Thai and Fijian PMs.Yet one of the ludicrous band of obsessives has managed it.Congratulations.

Is this some kind of banana republic summit of the world 'coup' leaders?

Hey when you need some good publicity you have to start somewhere. Where is Fiji? back to the World Atlas. Will I need a magnifying glass to find a small island? Do they really grow bananas? You better treat this guy nice he is buying more from you than you are from him.
