1) Tip: Was in Central Airport Plaza and saw a shirt in CHAPs shop that I liked. The very helpful guy offered me a 10% discount on production of my passport (which I happened to have with me after completing my 90 day report. I don't usually carry it around). So that might be a useful tip for anyone shopping there in the future.

2) Questions: Is the 10% discount on production of a passport general / accepted practice in the malls (or elsewhere)?

Oh and I'm a resident in Chiang Mai, not a tourist...

you have residency or you are on a non immigrant visa?

Did they make a copy of the passport? I wonder if it was a VAT deduction or similar.

Seems strange to give a discount after seeing a passport.

You can be resident but not domiciled and/ or domiciled but not resident whether immigrant or not. I'm a non-domiciled UK resident and a non-resident Aus citizen who is domiciled but not resident or an immigrant nor a tourist of Thailand. Hope that clarifies that. What about yourself?

And to keep it on subject, a 10% discount is nice.

I might understand what you wrote by the year 2020 but for now, I am confused.

Many of us reside here doesn't make us residents though.

Nit picker of the day award to zeichen, where you currently reside is your residence, you are a resident of your residence. Not that you have aquired permanent resident status. Alway happy to help non native speakers.

Maybe if the OP had negotiated without a passport he could have got 25% discount.

The salesman probably reckoned he had his passport with him and must be a tourist, so the old 10% trick was put to work.

In some places 'to reside' means legally domiciled with bank account, utility bills in your name, etc. Of course, also must have correct documentation in passport. If not, then illegal.

Most Westerers have difficulty with the notion of bargaining, where and how it is done.

And then there a few who think they know it all.

WOW, a massive 10 per cent, what a ripper deal!

Salesman probably told his Boss some rotten Ferang beat him down by 30% and then smart salesman, pocketed 20% for his trouble.
