Lampang=>Good Place to buy a House?

Plus, the air quality during burning season is some of the worst in Thailand, terrain and location of the coal fired electricity generator are key factors. And as WTK has stated, it's a dreary place with nothing going on. At least in many other large towns in Thailand, it's possible to go to a major hotel for some creature comforts from time to time, a nice meal, use the health club and so on, even those things are not possible in Lampang.

There is a population of 150,000 in the city of Lampang that say otherwise.

I have no wish to call anyone's baby ugly, but, let's be factual rather than emotional. Said population surely can't dispute the existence of the country's largest coal fired generator nor the PCD numbers - a quick visit to any hotel booking web site will confirm what I wrote about 5 star hotels, or the lack of.

Like i see, there is some peoples in here who don´t like lampang. Ok, but what is the reason? Is it´s just only because lampang is more silence,if compare to chiang mai?

No, because other places are also very nice and quiet. Like Phrae, which is a very charming town. It's also that there isn't really anything going on in Lampang; no sights or points of interest to speak of, it's a long way to anything scenic.. It's all just quite dreary. It's a spot on the major Highway #1 and that's it.

Follow up to self, LOL. (Chiang Mai does have a great mental hospital by the way.) But I thought about it more and I think the above needs further qualification.

I'm ranking Chiang Mai quite a bit higher because from where I live, I can drive 20 minutes in one direction and see this:

post-64232-0-14692000-1433731387_thumb.j

(This one of several little restaurant/coffee shops in the hills with great views and breezier weather.)

Or drive 20 minutes in the other direction and see this:

Or this:

And this:

And it helps that there are plenty schools and hospitals to choose from, though that of course is not a factor for everyone.

All of those things you can kinda-sorta find in Lampang, as well as in most provincial towns in Thailand, but it's kind of a very bland facsimile.

In Chiang Mai you have the best of both worlds: it can be a big modern city if/when you want it to be, but drive 20 minutes in the other direction and it's just small villages in the hills. No other place in Thailand has that. (Maybe Phuket, to a lesser degree. But Phuket has other issues.)

If you mostly appreciate the quiet then pick something rural, yet close to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai province is a very big place, and if you want a smaller town then you could live in Saraphi, Sankamphaeng, Doi Saket or Mae Rim or something. Lamphun even. Or even smaller villages in the hills.. Ban Pong in Hang Dong, the Mae Sa Valley area, Mae On towards the Sankamphaeng hills..

^ LOL, very typical as I know one or two people in the picture. Also had to laugh at the dude putting his hand in front of his face. Has something to hide no doubt. wink.png

So anyway, yes a good reason to pick Lampang would be fewer Chiang Mai expats and Thaivisa members. (But I'd still pick Phrae or Lamphun in that case) wink.png

I agree - that one hour is a myth; clearly is now 90 minutes at a minimum esp if heading west direction day-time...

And on the other side of Lampang figure two....

Just came across this thread. Please keep up with the negative assessments on the Lampang area. It will keep folks away

Lampang

I  live  in the Mae Tha   Lamphun area close to Lampang province.    we drive on occasion to Lampeng and pass through it often.   It has  most of the  big  box stores-Big C, Tesco-Lotus, Makro etc.  There are a couple interesting places to visit  - famous  temple WAt  PhraThat Luang etc.   The mountainous areas are  great  for touring.  Lampang  gets  bad air  during the burning season. I would  renting first as small  town Thailand can  be an acquired  taste.    Also  if you  rely on internet  connection  check it out  first before  setting  down roots.    Some rural areas  are  not served well  to put it mildly.
