Manufacturing Production Index shrank in April

BANGKOK, 29 May 2015 (NNT) - The Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) has indicated April’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) shrank 5.3 percent to 147.89, the lowest in 40 months.

OIE Deputy Director General Siriruj Chulakaratana revealed that the figure was the lowest MPI since December 2011 when the MPI plunged to 146.47 due to a major flood. He added the MPI in April 2014 was at 156.24.

He said April 2015 also saw the Capacity Utilization Rate dropping to 53.99 percent, compared to 63.64 percent in the month earlier and 56.41 percent in April 2014. Mr. Siriruj noted that this year’s April had more holidays than the same month in 2014.

The OIE Deputy Director General pointed out the main negative factors were the ailing global and local economies and under-performed exports of the Kingdom to top trading partners, such as European Union, the U.S. and China.

Notable export items that missed the target include hard disk, television, gems & jewelry, and electrical appliances.

NBTC and DOPA join hands in registering SIM cards

BANGKOK, 29 May 2015 (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA) are sharing a central database for registering mobile phone subscriber identification module (SIM) cards.

The NBTC signed two memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the DOPA on using the government electronic population database and using information technology in reading information from citizen identification cards. The MOUs would enable the registration service of prepaid mobile phone SIM cards at more than 2,400 district offices and other local administration offices nationwide from June 2 onward.

NBTC Secretary General Takorn Tantasith revealed that currently there are approximately 40 million registered SIM cards. He is confident that more users would register their SIM cards now that the MOUs have opened more channels for the service.

He said the added channels would ensure the registration of all existing 90 million mobile phone numbers before the July 31 deadline. The phones with unregistered SIM card can only receive calls, but are unable to receive calls, SMS or MMS messages.

Ministry of Labor considers income raise for state enterprises

BANGKOK, 29 May 2015 (NNT) - The Labor Minister said he has not ruled out the possibility of a 4 percent pay raise for state enterprise employees, adding that all factors must be taken into consideration.

Labor Minister General Surasak Kanjanarat has instructed the State Enterprise Policy Committee to look into the matter. The State Enterprise Workers’ Relations Confederation of Thailand (SERC) filed a petition to the ministry asking for the pay raise of 4 percent.

The SERC claimed that state enterprise employees should be given equal opportunity as civil servants in terms of income.

The Labor Minister said he expected state enterprises to improve their public services, if they were to receive higher monthly salaries.

He said he is not concerned whether the government will be able to pay, claiming that the decision is based on their accomplishments. The Ministry of Labor will discuss the matter with the Ministry of Finance.

FPO: Thai economy grew in April

BANGKOK, 29 May 2015, (NNT) - The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) yesterday indicated that Thailand’s economy grew in April, thanks to the government’s financial policy. It however pointed out that the export sector still under-performed.

According to Miss Kulaya Tantitemit, Executive Director of the FPO’s Macroeconomic Policy Bureau, the overall economic situation showed signs of improvement in April, especially in the government budget disbursement, which has a deficit of 45 billion baht.

She stated that the government's financial policy still plays a vital role in stimulating the local economy, particularly in the tourism industry, which saw 2.42 million foreign tourists visiting Thailand in April, an increase of 25.1 percent.

Miss Kulaya added that domestic consumption also showed growth signs, judging from the 2.5 percent increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) collection, which translated into 12.8 percent jump in domestic consumption. However, the export sector contracted 1.7 percent last month
