Mother in Tears: Daughter Dies in Russia, Family Struggles to Bring Ashes Home
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a heart-wrenching plea for assistance, 68-year-old Sewiad Duangnil and her 14-year-old granddaughter, from Buriram, have reached out to government agencies for help in returning the ashes of Sewiad's daughter, 43-year-old Pawinee Duangnil, who died unexpectedly in Russia nearly two months ago. Pawinee, a licensed Thai massage therapist, had traveled to Russia in October 2022 to earn a better living for her family. Tragically, she was found dead in her apartment on July 31, 2024, with initial reports suggesting she may have succumbed to exhaustion from long hours of work. The family is devastated, having lost their primary breadwinner and now facing the added burden of not being able to return her remains for a proper religious ceremony. Despite reaching out for help, they have received little guidance on how to proceed. Local labour volunteers have only been able to file requests with provincial labour offices, but progress has been slow. Authorities have informed the family that they must wait for the employer in Russia to handle the cremation and send the ashes back before they can obtain a death certificate and access other benefits. Although Pawinee's eldest daughter has sent a request for the cremation to proceed, almost two months have passed without any updates. Sewiad revealed that her daughter intended to return home in October 2024 after nearly three years abroad, hoping to provide for her elderly parents and support her two children’s education. Just five days before her untimely death, they spoke about her plans to renovate their home with her savings. The grieving family is now calling for immediate government intervention to help expedite the return of Pawinee's ashes and provide any available welfare assistance. “We have no one to turn to,” Sewiad lamented. “We just want to bring her home for the final rites.” The local labour volunteer, Paisarn Sutla, echoed the family's plight, emphasising the emotional and financial toll this loss has taken on them. Without their main supporter, the family is struggling to cover living expenses and educational costs for the grandchildren. As the family continues to wait in anguish, they appeal to the authorities to take swift action to resolve this painful situation. -- 2024-09-22 -

Fishing Incident Claims Father's Life in Mae Hong Son
Picture from responders. An incident occurred on September 19, when a father tragically drowned while fishing with his family at the Mae Lang overflow weir in Ban Rai, Sop Pong, Pang Ma Pha District. The 42-year-old man, identified only as Jai, fell into the water while attempting to retrieve a fishing line, disappearing before the eyes of his wife and four-year-old son. According to local officials, the family had gone fishing together when the accident happened around 13:20. Witnesses reported that Jai surfaced twice, struggling to stay afloat, before succumbing to the waters. His wife, 27-year-old Pla, immediately sought help from villagers upon witnessing the event. Rescue efforts began promptly, coordinated by Phonthep Jaroensuksakul, director of the Conservation Management Office, with support from local authorities, police, and volunteer rescue teams. On the first day, search efforts were hampered by difficult conditions, as the weir's concrete surfaces were slick with algae. Despite the challenges, divers were deployed to search the area on September 20, but no trace of Jai was found. As of the evening September 21, the rescue team adjusted their strategy, extending the search down the Mae Lang River towards the Hu Water Cave, a passage that leads to the Pai River. The search teams continue with the hope of recovering the body to return to the family. -- 2024-09-22 -

Assassination Attempt on Contractor in Trang
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An incident on the evening of September 20, a construction contractor narrowly escaped death after being ambushed and shot at multiple times. The victim, 43-year-old Mr. Sitthikorn, was targeted while parked in his BMW X3 outside his home in Trang province. According to reports, the assailant approached on a motorcycle disguised as a food delivery rider, complete with a raincoat and a food delivery bag. As Mr. Sitthikorn’s wife exited the vehicle to open the gate, the gunman pulled up beside the driver's door and opened fire. He was hit once in the right arm but survived the ordeal. Police from the Crime Suppression Division and local authorities have launched a manhunt for the shooter. Investigators are examining nearby surveillance footage, although the cameras at the scene malfunctioned. Witnesses reported that the attack lasted only 15-45 seconds before the shooter fled the scene towards the city center. Mr. Sitthikorn's mother-in-law described him as a good man, emphasising his dedication to family and work. She recounted that the couple had just attended a relative's funeral before returning home when the attack occurred. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the gunman had been surveilling the area prior to the attack. Authorities suspect that the suspect had been planning the shooting for some time, raising concerns about a possible contract killing. Investigations are ongoing, and police plan to conduct further interviews with Mr. Sitthikorn after he recovers from surgery. -- 2024-09-22 -

Picture from responders. What began as a casual drinking session on September 21, turned into a nightmare in Pathum Thani, when a man, intoxicated and angered by a disagreement, pulled a gun and shot two friends, leaving them injured. The shooter was later apprehended by police in a tense standoff while under the influence of alcohol. Police Lieutenant Sak Sit Boonrub, deputy investigator at Lat Lum Kaeo Police Station, received an emergency call from officials at Khlong Phra Udom Health Station. Two injured individuals, a man and a woman, had been rushed to the health centre by relatives following a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities found the victims: a man in his 30s who had sustained a gunshot wound beneath his right ribcage, and a woman in her 20s with a gunshot wound to her left upper arm. Both are Myanmar nationals. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two were drinking with friends at a residence in Khlong Phra Udom, Lat Lum Kaeo District, when an argument broke out with a 35-year-old Myanmar man, identified only as "Mr. Jo." Security Guard Causes Chaos Threatening Bomb at Gas Station
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a bizarre incident on the morning of September 21, a 37-year-old security guard caused panic at a PTT gas station in Chaiyaphum by claiming he had an explosive device. The man, identified as Mr. Sarayut, reportedly threatened to detonate a homemade bomb while sitting on a motorcycle near the restroom area. At around 10:30, local police were alerted to the disturbance at a convenience store located within the gas station. Witnesses reported that Mr. Sarayut claimed to be in possession of an improvised explosive device (IED). Employees quickly contacted authorities as the situation escalated. Police, along with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. Despite thorough inspections, no explosive devices were found. Instead, officers discovered 15 methamphetamine pills and drug paraphernalia hidden in a plastic bag under the motorcycle seat. Witnesses described Mr. Sarayut as disoriented and unable to communicate coherently, repeatedly mentioning the supposed bomb. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the local police station for further questioning. Authorities believe the man's erratic behaviour was the result of drug use, specifically methamphetamine, which he appeared to be under at the time. Mr. Sarayut will face multiple charges, including possession of illegal drugs, drug use, and causing public disorder. -- 2024-09-22 -
