Lawyer’s petition for Manas rejected

BANGKOK: -- The legal team for army specialist Lt Gen Manas Kongpaen has petitioned the court for an emergency inquiry on the legality of the issuance of warrants for his arrest and subsequent detention on alleged human trafficking charge.

But their petition was rejected by the court with reason that the warrant was legal and in accordance with the law.

Lt Gen Manas Khongpaen, a lead suspect in the Rohingya human trafficking case, is now being held at the Nathawi provincial prison.

His family, relatives and friends visited him yesterday.

Lt Gen Manas complained that he was unable to sleep because of the unfamiliar surroundings and food that he was being served.

The legal team petitioned the Nathawi Court for a review of the legality of his warrant as well as the manner in which he was being detained claiming that by rights, he should be tried under a military tribunal in accordance with the National Council for Peace and Order’s edicts.

But the request was refused however as the courts deemed that the arrest and detention was correct in accordance with the letter of the law.

In response, the legal team stated that they will be preparing to file a petition for bail.

Pol. Gen. Ake Angsananont, the deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police meanwhile, stated that the case involving Rohingya human trafficking was progressing steadily under the correct procedural guidelines.

He said the case file was solid and complete.

The Ministry of Defense also ordered that with regards to the case against Lt. Gen. Manas, the investigation will proceed according to the letter of the law and whoever is found to be connected or has any involvement be dealt with decisively, he said.

So far, all the main suspects in the case have either been arrested or have turned themselves in to authorities.

In an other topic an other known red supporter said that the guy would get an army tribunal so they could hide the truth. Here you say he is going to be thrown under the bus.

Whatever the current junta does they can never do it right in the eyes of some people.

I like it that he is in jail and is getting a trial ill hold my judgement until i see what the verdict is.

If you could read and comprehend i say nothing of the sought, i asked would he be thrown under the bus, or would he be saved from that. Its a choice of 2 ways, i do not say he would be thrown under the bus at all, which if you could read you would understand.

Your second sentence could be said exactly about the previous Govt and the ones preceding that, its human nature, especially in a place where there is such a divide on opinion on politics.

You should never be able to raise above the Law. It is said he has done much for Thailand, which may be true, but if involved he did not do much for those hundreds buried, raped and tortured while imprisoned in the South. They may have had no route to be in Thailand, but they were/are humans and need to be treated correctly until deported.

Did I read where 40M THB went missing during a raid under his watch ??

There is an interesting piece on him in the other website this morning. Seems he has had a long and chequered or successful career depending on whose perspective you take.

The fact that General Prawit came out so quickly to protest his innocence suggests he really is a powerful and well connected player. I also like the way General Prawit is described as the 'national coup expert'.... very apt.

Will be interesting to see where this one goes.

There is a difference between being tough and just being corrupt/evil.

In Thailand it's very common for many officers to rocket through the upper ranks like the general officer ranks. Thailand must have about a million military and police generals (yea, I'm exaggerating)....according to a Oct 13 Bangkok Post article the Thai military has 1600 active duty military generals, the second highest in the world. Expect the number of police generals is even higher. Generals are a dime a dozen in Thailand.

Your second paragraph is true.. but I was now talking that among the ranks of red followers here it does not matter what way the junta turns its always wrong. That is within one party.. more like a witch hunt blaming them with whatever arguments they can find.

I am pretty sure I would not be able to sleep well in a Thai prison and I think the same can be said for you. If he is locked up like farangs and normal Thais sleeping is not something easy then.

This guy just wasn't just tough he was conducting his own one man war in the southern provinces and that was the main reason he was promoted quickly. Despite whatever goverment was in power at the time, nearly all were prepared to turn a blind eye to his methods. There are only 3 grades of General in the RTA, based on the British Army system, 1600 out of a standing Army of over 190,000 is not all that disproportionate.

Total Thai active duty military strength is approx 306K with approx 1600 flag/general officers...that works out to a general officer for every 191 personnel.

Total U.S. active duty military strength is approx 1.4M with approx 892 flag/general officers...that works out to a general officer for every 1,570 personnel.

Total UK acitve duty military strength is approx approx 147K personal....not sure how many flag/general officers they have now but I heard they are pretty top heavy like described in this article and were suppose to be undergoing a reduction.

Tough or Brutal?

The two are not the same, especially in soldiering.
