17 May One Marine was killed when MV-22B Osprey, BuNo 168020, c/n D0150, of VMM-161, 'YR-01',[203] from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit experienced a hard-landing mishap, burned, while conducting training aboard Marine Corps Training Area – Bellows at ~1140 hrs., Hawaii time. Twenty-one Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman were aboard at the time, and all other 21 have been transported to local hospitals for assessment and treatment. The Marines were conducting routine sustainment training at the time. The 15th MEU departed San Diego 10 May on a seven-month deployment to the Pacific Command and Central Command areas of operation. The cause of the incident is under investigation.[207] Military officials confirmed the death of a second Marine, in hospital on 19 May. "Family members and sources close to the victim identified him as Matt Determan and said he died Tuesday from injuries sustained during the crash, which also killed 24-year-old Lance Corporal Joshua Barron and injured 20 others. At least two of the Marines who were injured in the crash remained hospitalized in stable condition on Tuesday, according to a Marine Corps. spokesperson."[208]

22 May A U.S. Navy aviator ejects from a T-45C Goshawk, 'A', of VT-9, based at NAS Meridian, Mississippi, when he overruns runway 29 at Halsey Field, NAS North Island, California, at ~1400 hrs. PDT with both pilot and airframe ending up in San Diego Bay. Civilian boaters rescue the pilot who is conveyed to UC San Diego Medical Center for examination. He was treated and released. The airframe, which came to rest upright partially submerged in shallow water was retrieved by a crane as night fell.[209] The pilot, who was not named, was conducting a routine training mission to prepare for aircraft carrier landing qualifications, according to the Navy.[210]

Imagine if these accidents had happened in Thailand, what an outcry there would be on TVF, the whole Thai population would have been slated and Thailand put through the wringer, but of course they didn't happen in Thailand OMG, there were Farangs involved, what is the world coming to, perhaps they were American Thai's, yep, that must be it. facepalm.gif

agreed, old girls and I believe that they are F-16A/B Block 15's, as opposed to the more modern Block 60 and variants

Well if you are desperate to make Thailand look normal, then you can quote maybe the statistics for say - number of crashes per F-16 Take Off (or crash before it even managed to take off) since the plane first went into service, and then compare them with the US stats.....

at least this one will provide a few more spare parts to keep the other 3 in the air a bit longer....

Glad the driver was alright. Has to be an old original as Thailand has not upgraded or purchased the upgraded F-16 models which would run circles, so to speak, around the "little boys" as I call them, currently in service. Still the best "bang for the buck" around, like the Timex and C-130, and although not a F design, the A-10, takes a beating and keeps on ticking. I live in the military pattern and when the 16's are in town is is very obvious. Maybe the only thing louder were the A-10's here a couple of years back. A good driver in the seat of a late model block of F-16 could probably beat that piece of junk F-35 in a real dogfight, that is if the F-35 could get off the ground, it wasn't night and the weather wasn't bad...lol.

Pilot can pay lots of tea-money & apply for a job in Thai Airways or one of our many B-Listed carriers.

Depends on the cause of the crash, but expect him to be moved to an inactive post for the time being.

As for the plane looking old, that camouflage is dust from the plane ploughing up the turf...

That's because it's lying in a ditch with a broken nose feeling sorry for itself.

Air force types use the term "ditched the plane" when there's a major problem, in this case the pilot followed procedure correctly.

Anyway, I am sure the RTAF can dig up a few more operable units.

Do they have many left?

The article is so brief and the details given so vague that it's hard to tell exactly what happened. I can tell you that on a "normal training" flight the engine is not "run-up" until on the runway and taking off. Now if he was experiencing any sort of engine anomalies he may have run up the engine to try and trouble shoot the problem, however I can't imagine doing so without the brakes being set or at least applied. The good news is that the zero / zero ejection seat worked as promised, though I'm not sure it was actually needed . . . again the article is very short on details. Check Six boys!

Many years ago when I was in the RAF, engine personnel used to groud run the engines. To do this the brakes were on and locked and the wheels were double chocked and chained. One of our guys was doing a ground run and the aircraft jumped the chocks and the brakes but fortunately he shut the engine down immediately and there was no damage.

I live right under their flight path in Korat, for take off & landing.

They frighten the SH!T out of me. Watching them drive on the road is bad enough

not to mention the shopping trollies in Tesco.w00t.gif

You said not to mention the shopping trolleys ?
