Russia halts gas supply to Ukraine amid pricing dispute

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian gas giant Gazprom says it has halted supplies to neighboring Ukraine after the collapse of pricing talks.

Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said Russia halted the supply at 10 a.m. Moscow time on Wednesday because Ukraine did not pay the advance for the July delivery.

Russian and Ukrainian energy ministers on Tuesday failed to reach an agreement on future supplies. The Ukrainian minister said the discount that Russia offered wasn't enough and that Ukraine will buy gas from other countries starting Wednesday until an agreement is reached.

Gas consumption is low at this time of year, allowing Ukraine to bargain for better terms.

Pricing disputes between Russia and Ukraine in the past have led to gas wars, leaving other European nations without heating in the dead of winter.

While Russia, at the moment says, that they will not stop the gas supply to Europe, it gives them a chance to use it as a political weapon.

One of the reasons, why European countries should not be dependant of the Russian gas, nor electricity. Houses could get cold during the winter month. Do they actually export anything else in a large scale?

Ah yes it is much better and safer to be dependent on gas from the Middle East....

Or otherwise get the shale gas from the US at considerable cost.

Some people cannot see the total cost of anything... just the price at the counter. Too bad.

The cost of gas from Middle East dependence Europe can see - just take a look out the window.

The cost of gas from Russia dependence Europe have seen already - looking out the window in 1945.

The cost of gas from USA dependence Europe can never see - there is no way one can see inside of one's brain.

But the general philosophical concept is quite easy for any idiot to see: - NOTHING IS FREE. AND NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS.

Russia is actually exporting on a large scale:

  • Oil
  • Gas
  • Wood (mostly to China and other countries of South East Asia)
  • Aluminum
  • LPG gas (even to Thailand)
  • Space technology (the first man in Space was Russian, in 1961)
  • Airplanes
  • Helicopters
  • Ships
  • Various arms and ammunition
  • Seafood
  • Urea (fertilizer component)
  • Chemicals
  • etc.

One must examine the adhesion contract Ukraine was forced to enter with Russia to fully comprehend what is going on here. One could get a better deal with the New York mafia than what Ukraine was forced to agree to.

Yes, titanium, which is used in aerospace fuselages.

What is the price of Russian gas? What is the price of ME gas? What is the price of US gas to Europe (as they have yet to build the export terminals)? What do you base your statement on?

You have to love the spin the various media outlets place on geo-political stories... The AP places the blame on Russia for the failure in price negotiations, while Russian media paints a different picture... From RT.com...

According to RT, Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak and Ukraine’s Energy and Coal Minister Vladimir Demchishin both admitted to reporters that the negotiations had born no fruit. Demchishin added that there would be a new round of talks in September.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s energy company, Naftogaz, will stop buying gas from Russia as of Wednesday, July 1.

“As of June 30, 2015, the agreement between Naftogaz and Gazprom runs out, and conditions for continued supply of Russian gas to Ukraine have not been agreed upon; Naftogaz will no longer be purchasing gas from the Russian company,” a press release by Naftogaz said.

Despite Kiev’s purchasing freeze, Russia will continue direct supplies of gas to Ukraine’s southeast, Novak said. It has been doing so since February, when Kiev claimed that it could no longer supply gas to the conflict-torn regions due to damaged pipelines. Gazprom insists that Kiev is still responsible for paying for the gas that goes to the southeast.

Politicizing energy supply is a bad, bad thing (when Russians do it). Some people even think it's worth going to war over. Go figure.
