Officials help an Omani man into a vehicle at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute yesterday after he fully recovered from MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). The man was the only confirmed MERS patient in Thailand.

BANGKOK: -- THE 75-year-old Omani man who was the first confirmed case of MERS-CoV (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus) in Thailand, was discharged from hospital late yesterday after fully recovering from the disease.

The Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute decided to let the patient and his three relatives go home after lab tests confirmed his full recovery. Doctors also said the man's heart problems had improved, that the patient was self-sufficient and could now walk short distances.

Representatives from the Oman Embassy were due to pick up the man and his relatives from the institute and escort them to the airport for a flight late yesterday.

So far, this is the only confirmed MERS case in the country.

Public Health Minister, Prof Dr Rajata Rajatanavin confirmed that the patient was fully cured and that the 176 people who had been in contact with him had also been cleared of the virus. He said the patient had tested negative for the virus in five consecutive checks.

The minister noted that Thailand was still at risk due to a large number of tourist arrivals and its position as a regional medical hub. Screening measures would continue to be implemented to prevent a possible spread, he said.

Emeritus Prof Dr Prasert Thongcharoen, adviser to the Disease-Control Department Professor, also said strong prevention and control measures should still stay in place despite this patient's full recovery.

In South Korea, the virus had killed 33 people and a total of 184 cases had been confirmed, 42 of whom are still in hospital, including 12 in a critical condition.

Come on then, all you Thai bashers!

Thailand is the only MERS effected country in the world to have a 100% recovery (cure) rate for this disease!

Thailand has achieved a 0% mortality rate for MERS!

Thailand has a 0% cross infection rate for MERS!

ETC.ETC.

NOTE: Statistics supplied by the Department of Misinformation, a branch of TAT.
