American tourist caught up in necklace snatch on Baht Bus.

A crime which is all too common here in Pattaya is the theft of necklaces from around the necks of unsuspecting victims.

Mr. Leo Madley aged 36 from America made a complaint at Pattaya Police Station on Sunday Night and claimed that he had just become another victim of this popular crime, especially amongst young Thai men who see it as an easy way to make some cash. He explained to Police that the crime occurred on Pattaya Beach Road between Soi’s 5 and 6.

The crime occurred as he was sitting on a Baht Bus. Unbeknown to him, two men on a motorbike had been following the bus for some time. When they decided the time was right, they pulled up beside the Baht Bus and snatched a gold necklace worth around 40,000 Baht from around his neck and they then sped off in the direction of Walking Street.

The report was made and Mr. Madley will claim for the theft under his travel insurance.

That's two US visitors losing their gold neckware in one week. Neighbour in my condo lost his expensive jewelry on Jomtien Beach Road the same night. A couple of boys on a motorcycle did a snatch and run.

Me thinks the 40 000 Baht is a number created for the insurance claim. It is about 3 troy ounces of gold.

Why such a shock?

At to-day`s price of Thai gold which is 10,542 baht per baht weight then this chain assuming that it is Thai gold and is valued at 40,000 baht will probably weigh less than 2 Troy ounces or approx 62 grams......hardly a heavy chain.

If it was bought in the West and even if it was of a lower carat quality then it could weigh much less and still be valued at 40,000 baht.

BTW hate to bring this up but I did see Daleyboy and Mr Bojangles with studded collars being lead around on leashes at Jenny's. It didnt look quite right, but they seem to be enjoying themselves.
