Modifying a licenced bike

Hi people... If I buy a bike with book etc, and buy a different (bigger) engine to put in it, and need to modify the frame for it to fit, can I still keep the licence/registration plate that came with it (obviously after declaring the engine and showing invoices etc)? Has anyone actually done this? Cheers...
