Yes, because my Child travels internationally.... Its not a big deal, but its certainly not a name I would choose.

When choosing our Childs name my Wife and I had to think carefully about a name which could be comfortably and accurately pronounced by various family members (English and Thai) without any 'double' meanings...

It's actually pronounced Phom. But yes the english spelling by Thai's is crazy.

For example an acquaintance of mine had her Thai ID with the last name of Unaphom. When she went to get her passport made, they changed it to Onaporn. I told her to go back and have it changed but the passport office said their decision is final and cannot be appealed.

So it's more like the leader of the country buthering their names rather than the people.

Actually...The name Porn as you pronounce it...is fairly common around here.

But it's pronounced "PAWN"....when out of Thailand one I know uses the name "Dawn"....job done.

so there you go.....

Yes, my wife and I did the same and that's how we settled on Langoustine.

Yes it can be either gender......

Think having a falang dad would mean she is very likely to have dealings with the west later in life. And knowing western thinking, it wouldn't help her being called Porn...

my lawyer was called Siriporn, pronounced Silly Porn... which I must admit made me chuckle at first meeting

Various Thai names can have a very different connotation in a western country.

Pui - my own mother will NOT pronounce it. Why?

Yes. My brother in law is called Porn (short for Pornchai)

I think Miss Universe 1988 Porntip Nakhirunkanok pronounced her name as it appears. That's the way it was presented at the time.

I would not do it in the states, but in Thailand, the name Porn means "to be blessed by Buddha". Very nice name here.

I have a step son named Porn and his nickname is Suer, pronounced just like where you toilet waste goes. The kid has no chance in the west.
