Private sector urges PM to set up export promotion board



BANGKOK: -- The private sector yesterday urged the prime minister to set up an export promotion board to boost the country's exports to achieve its projected target of 4% growth.

Besides, the board will also help to push export problem solving into a national agenda.

The proposal was reached at the meeting of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) yesterday.

According to NNT, the JSCCIB proposed the revival of the export promotion board to boost Thai exports to the global market.

It said the revival was necessary to improve the export sector that has already been in decline for nearly three consecutive years.

The board would be presided over by the prime minister who would play an important role in solving export issues and promoting export products in 12 clusters such as automobiles, gems and jewelry, food, construction and health and beauty.

Thailand’s export volume has declined by 4.8% during the first half of this year.

At the meeting the JSCCIB also proposed that the government terminate value added tax collections on certain raw materials and impose tax exemption on income generated from investments abroad to help manufacturers cope with rising production cost.

Why doesn't the private sector set one up themselves using their own money instead of expecting the goverment to to do it with taxpayers money.

After all they will be the ones to benefit if it works, and if it doesn't, well it will be their money lost and not the governments.
