PHUKET: -- The driver of the truck that crushed a 12-year-old girl and dragged her body 150 metres to her death in Thalang last Friday (July 31) has been charged.

Sittipong Sinphae, 22, was arrested that same day, just two hours after the horrific incident, Maj Santi Prakobpran of the Tah Chatchai Police confirmed.

Sittipong was arrested in Chalong after police tracked down the vehicle through CCTV footage.

“We identified the truck by the description given and its license plates,” Maj Santi said.

“We also found marks on the truck matching the description of the accident.”

Sittipong told police that he had no idea that he had collided with the motorbike.

“He said that if he had known [about the accident], he would have stopped,” Maj Santi said.

“He said that he heard a noise, but thought it was just the sound of the truck going over a pothole in the road.”

Sittipong has been charged with reckless driving causing death and fleeing the scene of an accident, Maj Santi confirmed.

In the tragic accident last Friday, Wassana Kaewkampa, 40, told police that she was driving her motorbike southbound and had just passed the Tha Chat Chai police checkpoint onto the island just after 6am when the truck forced her off the road at the first bend.

Ms Wassana was sent scuttling along the ground, and escaped with scrapes and bruises, but her daughter, Lantaporn Duongkhare, was flung under the truck.

Good!!!

If he'd of known he would of stopped. Yeah right that old chestnut.

In typical fashion he tried to get away with it.

I would love to see a follow-up story on this guy's punishment.

Bad people are always deeply sorry .... after they get caught.

Not much will happen to him. When a Mercedes transporter almost smashed head on into my Honda Jazz, driver was on drugs, he was fined 400 Baht at the police station for dangerous driving plus pending investigation for drug taking. The car was a complete mess, i had to climb out of the window to get out. I asked the police inspector what would have happened if my 4 year old son had been in the car and had been killed, answer,''That would have been much more serious, he would have been fined 35,000 Baht'' I asked what would have happened to me if i had killed the SOB out of grieve and anger, ''Oh, you would get life in jail''.

a fully loaded truck yes you would have never felt the motorbike bounce off the side. i wonder if she was one of those that make that left turn and never look ? Had some close calls with these fine drivers.

If I remember correctly from the original article, this was a 16 wheel truck. With a truck that size, it is entirely conceivable that the driver never felt the small "bump" against the motorbike, and that he assumed the "bump" he felt running over the girl was a pot hole. After all, he didn't do a runner, so he may be telling the truth.

Unfortunatly this will not be the same for the Thai model who killed a cop, the heir of Red Bull, the owner of Central Malls...

2,000B fine and a slap on the wrist ... Next death please ...

Not wanting to contradict your sensible post, but you must remember there is a hand book to give excuses for all that ails Thailand, too many too quote but I am sure we have heard a few.bring on the detractors.
