Min of Commerce to survey damage in drought-hit areas

BANGKOK, 8 August 2015 (NNT) – The Office of Agricultural Economics is preparing to survey drought-hit areas to estimate agricultural damage, as the rainy season has eased the crisis.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Petipong Pungbun Na Ayudhya said the survey of drought-affected farming areas would begin next month during which time all regions should be free of drought. According to an initial estimate, affected areas could have covered 270,000 rai. Meanwhile, the Cooperative Promotion Department has compiled a list of farmers needing help from Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

Mr. Petipong said precipitations during this period were sufficient for consumption and the ecological system. But related agencies still need to monitor the pattern of rainfall closely until the end of October. He added the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) would lower the water supplies from reservoirs thanks to consistent rainfalls.

Water reserves in major dams are estimated at 5.4 billion cubic meters this year, which can tide the agricultural sector over until April next year. The reserves, however, is below the standard level.
